Patrick Mahomes dislocated his kneecap only a week ago against the Denver Broncos. Now, he’s practicing and hasn’t been ruled out against the Packers.
When Patrick Mahomes was laying on the Mile High turf, it appeared the season was over for both he and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Six days later, Mahomes was back on the practice field in a limited capacity despite a dislocated kneecap the week prior.
While his status for Sunday remains murky at best, head coach Andy Reid has not ruled him out for Sunday’s game with the Green Bay Packers. Kansas City has continued to give the first-team reps to backup quarterback Matt Moore, who relieved Mahomes in a 30-6 triumph over the Denver Broncos last week.
It remains the smart bet Moore will be staring his first game for the Chiefs this weekend, but it’s unsure. Mahomes has practiced twice in a limited role and technically could suit up to face off against Aaron Rodgers under the lights of Arrowhead Stadium.
At 5-2, the Chiefs would like to beat Green Bay but don’t desperately need the game. Kansas City is currently the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoff picture and has a comfortable lead over the second-place Oakland Raiders in the AFC West. Furthermore, Mahomes could continue to sit and allow his high-ankle sprain to recover, one that he has been dealing with since the second quarter of Week 1.
On Friday, the Chiefs will have their final practice of the week before doling out injury designations. With the rule changes a few years ago, Mahomes can’t be listed as probable. If given a designation, he would be listed as questionable (50/50 chance of playing), doubtful (25 percent chance) or out (not permitted to play).
We will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds. For now, Mahomes could technically play on Sunday.
