Jets need to start selling off pieces after loss to Jaguars

New York Jets

The New York Jets got battered again by the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the time has come for the team to start backing up the truck and selling off some pieces.

The good news for the Jets was that they managed to score points today, a step forward after getting shut out by the New England Patriots on Monday night. That was about the only positive for the Jets today, who got embarrassed once again by the Jacksonville Jaguars in an effort that should inspire the truck to get backed up in Florham Park.

Sam Darnold played better (although to be fair, it was hard for him to do worse than he did on Monday when he was seeing ghosts), but he still was sacked eight times and threw three more interceptions. The Jaguars focused on taking Le’Veon Bell away from the Jets, although the Jets only gave him nine carries for 23 yards, which is bafflingly bad usage since he is the team’s best offensive player.

The defensive unit was bad as well as the Jags outplayed them for most of the game. Gardner Minshew had an absolute field day against the Jets’ abysmal secondary, completing 22 of 34 passes for 279 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

For the first real “easy” game in the Jets’ schedule, they failed the test miserably, and this should spark quite a bit of selling prior to the trade deadline. Leonard Williams and Robby Anderson should both extract good value for the Jets, who need all the help they can get to rebuild this franchise.

Thanks to a litany of abysmal drafting from John Idzik and Mike Maccagnan, the Jets have one of the thinnest rosters in the league with few assets and not enough draft capital to address all of their needs. It will be a long time before the Jets are good again, so this game was another reminder that they need to start the rebuilding process in earnest this week.
