Josh Allen catches a touchdown pass from John Brown, as the Buffalo Bills strike first on Houston Texans, owning head coach Bill O’Brien in the process.
It had been 20 years since the Buffalo Bills found pay dirt in a postseason game. But they were not going to be denied in 2019 when they took on the Houston Texans. Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll drew up a few marvelous play calls on their opening drive, resulting in a magnificent touchdown reception by quarterback Josh Allen. Yes, that happened and it was awesome.
It took six plays for the Bills to march down the field on their opening drive. The touchdown was set up largely by an Allen 42-yard scamper to reach the Houston 20-yard line. Two plays later, Daboll had wide receiver John Brown complete a pass to the left to find Allen wide open for an easy score.
It was a bad look for Houston head coach Bill O’Brien, as his defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel looked completely perplexed on the sidelines. How do you let a quarterback who has never played in a playoff game before score a touchdown without even hardly throwing the football? Well, Allen can not just pass, but he can run AND catch. He’s a triple-threat at the quarterback position.
Buffalo has the significant coaching staff advantage in this ball game, as head coach Sean McDermott is one of the best young coaches in the league today. Daboll will be an NFL head coach one day and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier may get his second opportunity at leading a team at some point.
Overall, it was an opening drive that has to have Bills Mafia ecstatic about the game ahead. As for Houston, it’s not a great start for a team that has hosted the first Wild Card game for four of the last five postseasons. If the Texans get outcoached this badly the rest of the way, there is no hope for Houston to make its first-ever trip to the AFC Championship. The Texans need to figure it out.
