The truth about Josh Allen’s 2019 fantasy football season

Buffalo Bills, Fantasy Football

Josh Allen might have had a nice second season quarterbacking the Buffalo Bills, but here is the truth about his 2019 fantasy football season.

In his second season out of Wyoming, quarterback Josh Allen helped lead the Buffalo Bills to the AFC playoffs. While he still has plenty of room to grow as a passer, he quietly became one of the better and most consistent fantasy football quarterbacks. He finished the 2019 fantasy season as the No. 6 quarterback overall and the fourth-most consistent signal-caller.

The Fantasy Footballers do like Allen as a fantasy football quarterback but do have their reservations about the guy. Andy Holloway says he’s a big fan of Allen ever since he was drafted by the Bills, especially because of his abilities to make plays in the ground game with his legs. Though he’s not going to light it up with his arm, he is a very consistent fantasy quarterback.

However, this is the biggest issue about Allen in terms of fantasy. He hasn’t proven himself as a QB1 who can win you weeks when you need him to the most. Other perceived second-tier quarterbacks like Jameis Winston might have bigger boom-or-bust potential, but Allen never hits for you like Winston does when he goes off and throws for 450 yards and four touchdowns.

While Allen’s style of play is key in helping the Bills win games by playing ball control and winning with defense, you can’t count on Allen to come up for you big when you need him most in fantasy. Though he’s incredibly consistent, and a very high one at that at quarterback, he can’t be the best or even second-best player on your fantasy football roster. The ceiling is not that high for him.

The good news is he’s a great top-three or top-four fantasy player to have. Jason Moore pointed out if you have Christian McCaffrey as your star running back in a dynasty league, then Allen’s consistency and dual-threat playmaking abilities can supplement a strong fantasy football roster.

In short, you can win with Allen, but only if he’s not expected to carry you like a bell-cow back.

Allen will remain undervalued in fantasy leagues because of his perceived passing limitations. One can expect he’ll get better as a thrower, but it won’t be the reason he’s a good, but not a great fantasy football quarterback. You can take him high in a fantasy draft, but probably not before the fourth or fifth round.
