Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa may have grown up a diehard Dallas Cowboys fans, but he won’t only play professionally for America’s Team.
Tua Tagovailoa grew up a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, but it doesn’t mean he has to play for them.
The former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback will likely be a top-five pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. It doesn’t matter he suffered three significant injuries during his time in college. Have you seen that spiral rifling out of his left hand? It’s amazing.
Along with his accuracy and leadership traits, it’s easy to see why so many NFL teams love the guy. But will he play for anybody not named Dallas?
When asked if the only team he would play for is the Cowboys, Tagovailoa was pretty clear.
“That’s not true.”
The question was in reference to recent comments made by the Alabama quarterback in which he touted his die-hard Cowboys fandom. But even though he has two dogs named Dallas and Star, Tagovailoa isn’t particular about where his NFL career starts.
“All I said was I’m a big Cowboys fan,” Tagovailoa said. “I’d be grateful to be drafted by any team.”
Dallas could theoretically trade up for him, but don’t bet on it. Doing so would mean the Cowboys aren’t bringing back Dak Prescott and would also mean surrendering a king’s ransom of assets to trade up high enough to get a chance to draft Tua.
That’s not happening.
Going to either Miami or Los Angeles are better entry points for Tagovailoa’s budding NFL career. With the Dolphins, weren’t they allegedly tanking for him in the first place? Miami weren’t expected to win any games last year. They won five and could still end up drafting him. He could be the Drew Brees Nick Saban wished he was able to sign back in 2006. Can you even imagine what happens if the Dolphins don’t medically clear Tagovailoa and he goes to the Chargers?
As for the Chargers, Tagovailoa would play on the West Coast, significantly closer to his native Hawaii. If he plays up to his standard for the Bolts, Tagovailoa will be beloved by the fanbase like Dan Fouts, Junior Seau, LaDainian Tomlinson and Rivers were before him. He would make an uninteresting team relevant again.
Frankly, either team is better fit for him than the Cowboys.
