With Drew Brees back under center for one more go at a championship, these five free agents would make the most sense for the New Orleans Saints.

For significant stretches of the 2019 season, the New Orleans Saints looked like one of the best teams in football. Poor luck with tiebreakers saw the Saints end up as the No. 3 seed in the NFC despite a 13-3 record, and New Orleans was promptly upset by the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round.

The good news for the Saints is that future Hall-of-Famer Drew Brees is back for another run at his second Super Bowl title. Brees’ return solves the biggest issue the Saints had this offseason, but there are still other areas they need to address.

Let’s take a look at five free agents who would be good fits in New Orleans.

5. Danny Trevathan

The Saints are currently projected for only $9.3 million in salary cap space, so they will have to make some hard calls in free agency. Linebacker is an underrated issue, with A.J. Klein set to hit the market while Kiko Alonso is likely a cap casualty.

If the Saints want to pursue an upside play at the position, they could go after Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan. Injuries limited Trevathan to nine games a year ago, but he was highly productive when he played, racking up 70 tackles.

Trevathan’s market may be a bit smaller due to his checkered injury history, but he could be a bargain for the Saints if he is healthy. Adding an impact player at the linebacker position would be a serious boon to the New Orleans defense.
