Re-signing Drew Brees makes the Saints legitimate Super Bowl contenders, but they need to get him some more help in this year’s NFL Draft.
The Saints are one of a handful of NFL teams with serious designs on winning a Super Bowl title this season. Bringing back Drew Brees puts New Orleans in contention, but they’ve got to get their veteran quarterback more help.
Signing Emmanuel Sanders in free agency was a big step in the right direction. He’ll lessen the team’s reliance on Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara in the passing game. That doesn’t mean the Saints won’t look to take advantage of the exceptional amount of talent at wide receiver in this year’s draft class.
Like every other team in the league, New Orleans could stand to add more talent at cornerback. Bringing Malcolm Jenkins in helps solidify things at safety, but one more talented cover guy would help this defense thrive in the playoffs.
Ultimately, the Saints are fortunate not to have too many roster holes. That should allow them to take the best player available at No. 24. That should allow Sean Payton to add one of the following five players to his talented team.
5. Henry Ruggs III
If Ruggs manages to fall all the way down to No. 24 then the rest of the NFL should be very afraid. Adding a speedster of his caliber to the Saints offense would be downright unfair.
He would start right away for Payton in the slot. The term match-up nightmare doesn’t begin to describe the challenge that would present for opponents. Trying to find enough speed to stop Ruggs and Sanders would be difficult. Doing that while containing Thomas would be downright impossible. Ruggs falling to New Orleans would allow him to become the steal of the draft.
