The Kansas City Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in 2019, and there is every reason to believe the defending champs will hoist the Lombardi Trophy again.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Andy Reid know how hard it is to win a Super Bowl.
Before being crowned champs at the end of the 2019 season, the Chiefs hadn’t won or been to the big game since Super Bowl IV, way back in January 1970. Reid coached 335 NFL games before finally earning his first title as a head coach with win No. 222.
Some teams have managed to lift consecutive Lombardi Trophies, but it’s tough.
The Green Bay Packers did it first, winning Super Bowls I and II. The Miami Dolphins did it in style, going undefeated in 1972 on their way to winning Super Bowls VII and VIII. The Pittsburgh Steelers have done it twice, winning Super Bowls IX and X as well as XIII and XIV. The 49ers (Super Bowls XXIII and XXIV), Cowboys (Super Bowls XXVII and XXVIII), Broncos (Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII) and Patriots (Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX) round out the list.
While it won’t be easy for the Chiefs to shake the “Super Bowl Hangover,” Kansas City has the right personnel and situation to pull it off.
Let’s take a look at a few reasons why the Chiefs will be able to repeat.
1. Andy Reid
Those aforementioned teams that repeated as Super Bowl champs were coached by Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Chuck Noll, Bill Walsh, Jimmy Johnson, and Bill Belichick. Five of those men are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the sixth is the greatest football coach ever.
Like Belichick, Reid isn’t in the Hall of Fame yet but he will be. Reid was likely going to have his bust in Canton regardless of whether or not he ever won a Super Bowl but by clinching the Lombardi at Super Bowl LIV, he made sure he’d be a first-ballot inductee.
As long as the Chiefs have Reid roaming the sidelines, they should be fine. The combination of Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes has proven deadly the last two seasons. There is no reason to believe the duo won’t pick up right where they left off in 2019.
The Chiefs will have the better coach in nearly every game they play. Now that he has the Super Bowl monkey off his back, Reid should be coaching looser than ever in 2020, something which will terrify defenses across the league.
