Kansas City Chiefs re-sign Demarcus Robinson: Grade, reaction and more

Kansas City Chiefs, NFL Free Agency

After winning the Super Bowl in 2019 with the Kansas City Chiefs, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson is returning to the team on a one-year deal.

The Kansas City Chiefs have continued to bring back their own this offseason.

After re-signing defensive tackle Mike Pennel and fullback Anthony Sherman to one-year deals earlier in the week, general manager Brett Veach retained receiver Demarcus Robinson on a similar pact.

Robinson, 26, was drafted by Kansas City in the fourth round of the University of Florida in 2016. Playing alongside Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce throughout his career, Robinson has been a third and fourth option in the passing game, notching 75 receptions for 949 yards and eight touchdowns in his career.

Robinson was a factor in Kansas City’s first championship in 50 years, catching 32 passes for 449 yards last season, both career-highs. In Week 2, Robinson torched the Oakland Raiders for six receptions, 172 yards and two scores.

Contract details

The Chiefs have to love this deal. They only pay $1 million against the cap. Considering the constraints they’re dealing with — no team currently has less cap space to work with — this is a win for Veach.

National reaction

There’s nothing to go crazy about here, but it’s a smart move for the Chiefs. Robinson is a good secondary weapon with speed, something the team values significantly. Kansas City now has Robinson, Hill, Mecole Hardman and Sammy Watkins on the roster, with youngster Byron Pringle as an emerging piece.

Kansas City also maintains long-term flexibility by only signing Robinson for a single season.
