The New York Giants select fourth-overall, and landing Chase Young isn’t likely. However, it’s possible and it would be an amazing gift.
We go back to Week 16, where the New York Giants went down to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Redskins.
The Giants won in overtime. In reality, though, they lost.
Why? Because the loser was lined up for the second-overall pick. For Chase Young. Probably…
Young arguably is the best player in this year’s draft class. His 16.5 sacks last year broke Ohio State’s single-season sack record. He also missed two games.
Young seemed like a lock to go second-overall, until reports out of the combine said that new Redskins head coach Ron Rivera met with Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and Rivera apparently is intrigued by him.
Tagovailoa seemed slated to go first-overall until his hip injury late last season, along with Joe Burrow’s Heisman season. But eyes are still on the lefty quarterback. While several quarterbacks are still on the free-agent market, the Redskins are in no position to pay one of them.
But let’s say Rivera gets his guy. The Detroit Lions own the third-overall pick – for now.
Yet they traded cornerback Darius Slay to the Philadelphia Eagles. As SNY’s Scott Thompson noted earlier this month, while the Lions have several holes to fill on defense, Jeff Okudah can be a much-cheaper replacement of Slay, all while being top talent in this draft. Okudah is easily the best cornerback in this class.
But again, this is all if the Lions hold onto that pick.
Keep in mind, the Giants would only have to move up one spot if they wanted said third-overall pick from Detroit.
But if the cards fall right, the Giants can get Young, who would be their best pass-rusher since Jason Pierre-Paul.
The Giants made quick fixes to the defense, signing cornerback James Bradberry and linebacker Blake Martinez. But they are still desperate for an edge rusher.
This is obviously a stretch. It’s a small glimmer of hope for the Giants, but the need for a quarterback goes a long way, sometimes unhealthily, and a team or two could be willing to move up to the second and third spots in this draft.
Why couldn’t the Giants lose in Week 16?
