Could Aaron Rodgers be turning into Brett Favre?
To start his career, Rodgers was drafted 24th-overall in 2005 by the Green Bay Packers. He was slated to sit behind future first-ballot Hall of Famer Brett Favre for years, learning from one of the all-time greats.
Of course, Favre ended up playing three more years with the Packers before retiring (and then unretiring a few times) before giving way to Rodgers.
No, with Rodgers being 36 years old, perhaps Green Bay is looking to make a bold move in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Jordan Love to the Packers?
In his latest mock draft, NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah has Green Bay selecting Love with the 30th-overall pick. Jeremiah notes Love could well be gone by that juncture but should he be available, general manager Brian Gutekunst may go big.
Rodgers is signed for four more seasons, and is still playing terrific football. He’s no longer the league’s best quarterback, the guy who propelled the Packers to a Super Bowl XLV win and then earning a pair of NFL MVPs, but damn good.
Would Green Bay actually select Love knowing Rodgers would be seething inside? The superstar may not show it outwardly, but taking his future replacement over a weapon to help him further his legacy with another Super Bowl? Yikes.
If the Packers took Love, Rodgers would suddenly be the aging mentor. He’d be Favre.
Should the Packers draft Love?
Let’s say Love gets to the 30th pick. Green Bay is undoubtedly going to have its choice of elite receivers considering how deep the incoming rookie class is.
Would Love be the right move over say, Denzel Mims or Brandon Aiyuk? In the short-term, no chance. In the long-term, it depends on how you feel about a quarterback who tantalizes with ability but comes up short in the numbers (20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions last season for the Utah State Aggies).
In reality, Gutekunst likely rolls with the receiver. The Packers were in the NFC Championship Game three months ago, and a premier weapons opposite Davante Adams could be the difference between another late-January exit and an early-February Super Bowl date.
Still, Jeremiah’s selection is worth gandering at. Green Bay has one of the league’s best under center, but time has a funny way of sneaking up and catching us unaware and unprepared.
