Dwayne Haskins ‘damn-near hated’ Joe Burrow at Ohio State

Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow used to go at it during practices at Ohio State.

Joe Burrow was the toast of college football in 2019, setting records and winning championships at LSU before culminating it with his NFL coronation as the top pick in this year’s draft.

But not everyone was always a fan of Burrow.

Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins played with Burrow while the two were briefly together at Ohio State from 2016 to 2018, and recalled trying to box the eventual Heisman winner out of a starting job.

“It was a heated competition, we damn-near hated each other at one point.”

The most we ever got into was about who was going on the next [practice rep],” Haskins explained to FanSided’s Mark Carman. “We never [came close to fighting], but it got a little heated at times. It was just competitive, that’s all.”

Whatever competitive animosity was shared between the two, Burrow was unable to win the starting role from Haskins and ended up transferring to LSU in 2018. The rest is history, as Burrow’s years at Ohio State now live in the towering shadow of his historic time with the Tigers. Haskins did alright for himself too, leading the Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl in 2019, earning the game’s MVP honor in the process and propelling himself to be a first-round draft pick that same year.

Now both Burrow and Haskins are franchise quarterbacks in the NFL. Haskins says whatever competition he had with Burrow at Ohio State was healthy and he’s already looking forward to when the Bengals come to Washington this upcoming season.

“I’m really excited for him to come [to Washington in Week 11] and get to play him”

Dwayne Haskins spoke on behalf of Pepsi “Stronger Together” Program, which aims to honor healthcare and other essential workers as hometown heroes by telling their stories. Select nominees will receive $1,000 care packages courtesy of Pepsi. Nominations begin on May 11th
