Redskins wide receiver Cody Latimer arrested Saturday morning

Cody Latimer is the latest NFL player to run afoul of the law, with an arrest in Colorado on Saturday morning.

Police in Douglas County, Colorado were called to an apartment early Saturday morning, and Washington Redskins wide receiver Cody Latimer was taken into custody.

Deputies responded to a call of shots fired inside an apartment at 12:11 a.m. There were no reported injuries, but authorities believer Latimer was the shooter. He was taken to Douglas County Detention Center, where he posted $25,000 bond later on Saturday.

Latimer is facing five charges: assault in the second degree, menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

Latimer was a second-round pick of the Denver Broncos — where he spent his first four NFL seasons — in 2014. He spent the 2018 and 2019 campaigns with the New York Giants before signing with the Redskins this offseason. He has 70 receptions for 935 yards and six touchdowns in his career, with career-highs in catches (24) and yards (300) last year.

Latimer’s situation will certainly cross the desk of the league office in due time, with fines or a suspension definitely on the table regardless of any court proceeding to come or ultimate conviction. Just this past week, Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar and Giants cornerback Deandre Baker were implicated as the perpetrators of an armed robbery in Florida.

Even without the discipline he’s lined up to get from the NFL, it was worth wondering if Latimer was going to make it to Week 1 on the Redskins’ 53-man roster. Terry McLaurin, Kelvin Harmon, Trey Quinn and rookie Antonio Gandy-Golden are already likely ahead of him on the wide receiver depth chart, and the trouble-to-talent equation won’t do Latimer any favors now.

When it’s all said and done, if the serious charges he’s facing hold up at all, Latimer’s NFL career may be over.
