Patrick Mahomes is the undisputed best quarterback in the NFL – here are five reasons why.
After securing the Super Bowl LIV MVP award, en route to leading to the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Lombardi Trophy in 50 years, Patrick Mahomes ended all debate: he is the best quarterback in the National Football League, and he will be running it for the foreseeable future.
Now, there are some who may still choose to argue to the contrary, arguing instead the best quarterback is future Hall of Famer Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints.
Further still, some may argue for the tremendous talent that is Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, or the (even younger) Baltimore Ravens defending league MVP, Lamar Jackson.
In case you still need convincing, here are five reasons why Mahomes is the best quarterback, nay, the best player, in the NFL today.
Patrick Mahomes is the most creative quarterback in the league
Yes, we all know by now that Mahomes makes throws that no one else in the league dare make – from no-look passes to throwing with the wrong hand, there does not appear to be a pass the young signal-caller won’t attempt.
But, his next-level creativity does not end with the unorthodox ways in which he’s willing to get rid of the ball. Rather, his imagination is on display on nearly every Chiefs drive in a multitude of different ways.
One drive, we might see Mahomes throw the ball where the route was never taking his receiver, but rather to a wide open area of the field the defense cannot get to. The very next drive, he might throw a bullet pass between four defenders in to the arms of his receiver. But, its also not just about how his imagination functions with where the ball goes, either.
The way Mahomes uses his feet in the pocket, too, shows how remarkable his intellect and creativity are. The 2018 league MVP makes all sorts of absurd plays by using his feet and body in the pocket in ways other quarterbacks cannot.
On one play, he may move all the way up to the line of scrimmage, before jumping in the air and passing with no footing. The next play, Mahomes may take a double drop back as a method to ensure time to complete the biggest play in franchise history, as he did when completing WASP to wide receiver Tyreek Hill in Super Bowl LIV.
Finally, Mahomes is also able to run the football. Mahomes has all the tools from quickness to speed, from toughness to strength, to make any run he needs to in order to move the ball down the field. No better example of this exists than his touchdown run at the end of the first half of the AFC Championship game against the Tennessee Titans, one of the best runs by a quarterback in league history.
