Does Dak Prescott need to lower his price to stay with Cowboys?

Dallas Cowboys

If Dak Prescott wants to remain a Dallas Cowboy, he may need to lower his contract demands.

The Dallas Cowboys struck gold with Dak Prescott, as the Mississippi State quarterback (who was a fourth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft) has been a good player for them since taking over as a rookie. It makes sense that he wants a big contract and that the Cowboys want to do whatever they can to keep him.

That being said, however, it’s getting to the point where Prescott might have to give up on those big contract dreams and Demarcus Ware, who played for the Cowboys from 2005-2013, thinks the Cowboys have offered Prescott ‘as much as they can’.

“I feel like they’ve offered as much as they can for a guy like Dak. You can see how, yeah, he made it deep into the playoffs but you haven’t won any championships. If you maybe had one of those rings on your hand, you might get 40 or 50 (million) right now.”

Ware is definitely onto something here.

It’s easy for the Kansas City Chiefs to pay Patrick Mahomes a boatload of money (and eventually they will) because he’s proven himself on the biggest stage. Prescott is a good player, but he’s yet to get his team past the NFC Divisional Round.

Dallas still hasn’t appeared in the NFC Championship Game since the 1995 season and if Prescott wants to get paid like Mahomes will be, he should be able to prove he can get his team to that pinnacle. When the Cowboys had the number one seed in the NFC playoffs in Prescott’s rookie season, they were one and done in blowout fashion to the Packers.

Prescott has been a nice player for the Cowboys during his time in the league and deserves to get an extension from the team. What he needs to realize, however, is that in order for the team to remain competitive, they have to pay other players around him to keep talent around.

Prescott isn’t like Mahomes where he can just sling it to whoever. No, Prescott needs playmakers and an offensive line that can block for him.

Another big thing Prescott needs to remember is that he plays for arguably the biggest team in America and with that, comes a lot of fame and fortune. He’ll get more advertisement deals being the quarterback of the Cowboys than he would if he were the quarterback of say – the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s just how it is in the NFL.

Dak Prescott wanting to get paid is understandable, but if he makes the big bucks he’s wanting, his team is ultimately going to experience a setback. The Cowboys have offered Prescott what they feel comfortable with and what they feel they can still win games with and eventually, he needs to realize that and accept what is offered to him and focus on getting his team to an NFC title game.
