Tony Romo gushes about Patrick Mahomes and The Run

Kansas City Chiefs

It’s easy to remember the passes Patrick Mahomes makes with his arm, but Tomy Romo understands how crucial his running ability can be.

NFL fans starved for content would be smart to tune in to CBS Sports today.

The network plans to air a replay of the 2019 AFC Championship game between the Chiefs and Titans. For those who don’t remember, the game features a scintillating touchdown run by Patrick Mahomes that occurred just before halftime.

Tony Romo certainly hasn’t forgotten about the play. When it happened, he told everyone tuning in that Mahomes had a “knack for making plays.” Furthermore, he exclaimed that he would “never forget” the video game-like run.

The Chiefs managed to dispatch the Titans by a final score of 35-24, but Kansas City had to overturn a first quarter deficit to seize the lead before halftime. Mahomes’ clever run proved to be a turning point in the game. The Tennessee defense did everything they could to stop Kansas City’s aerial attack, but they proved unable to stop Mahomes when he escaped their pass rush and took off downfield.

The replay of the late second-quarter run shows as a real reminder of how athletic Mahomes is. The majority of the time he uses his legs to create passing lanes that allow him to hit his dangerous playmakers further down the field. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t be an excellent scrambler for a different team. T

he Chiefs don’t want him to take too many hits, but he’s got the speed and wiggle to make big running plays on occasion.

The same description fit Romo during his playing time with the Cowboys. He was another quarterback who had the ability to make a big scramble when his team needed it. Romo isn’t Mahomes’ equal as a passer or runner, but the styles between the two quarterbacks are reasonably similar.

That’s probably why Romo has such an appreciation for all of Mahomes’ skills. It’s still interesting that one of his runs happens to be a play the former Dallas star will never forget.
