Will Redskins fire Jay Gruden after loss to the Giants?

With an 0-4 record after Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, is Jay Gruden not long for his job as Washington Redskins head coach?

After last Monday night’s loss to the Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden did not see a need to change quarterbacks. More specifically, he didn’t see a need bench Case Keenum in favor of rookie Dwayne Haskins.

Keenum being in a walking boot mid-week percolated talk of Haskins playing Sunday against the New York Giants. Keenum wound up being fine to start, but he was bad enough (6-for-11 for 37 yards with an interception) that Haskins entered the game in the first half.

Washington went home with a dismal 24-3 loss on Sunday, as Haskins went 9-for-17 for 107 yards with three interceptions. A report on Saturday suggested Gruden was coaching for his job on Sunday, with a loss obviously meaning he’d be fired.

Gruden still had his job as of his post game press conference, but by Monday morning that could very well change.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports offered the clear likelihood Gruden and the Redskins are headed for a parting of ways on Sunday morning. But he added indications of the hesitation on Gruden’s part to play Haskins for any reason besides injury, with a question about owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen sharing that vision. Colt McCoy is not back in game shape coming off a broken leg and Keenum was providing nothing while operating a less than full strength. Gruden had to try something on Sunday, if he were so inclined, and Haskins was literally the only option.

Next: Will playing Dwayne Haskins save Jay Gruden’s job?

Gruden is the only Redskins head coach to get to a second contract during Snyder’s reign as owner, and he is under contract through 2020. But now, into his sixth season, he has become fully entwined in the organization’s long-running dysfunction. So it seems highly possible Gruden would welcome being fired, and the sooner the better.
