Giants have to consider firing Pat Shurmur after season

New York Giants

The New York Giants lost another brutal game in Detroit, and that is the latest disappointment in the tenure of head coach Pat Shurmur, who should find himself on the hot seat.

As has been the case for the majority of Pat Shurmur’s tenure, the New York Giants found a way to lose a football game. Despite getting a strong effort from Daniel Jones, who rebounded from some rough games by going 28/41 for 322 yards and four touchdowns, the Giants still managed to lose 31-26 in Detroit.

The offense wasn’t really a problem for the Giants, who got a great effort out of Jones and more solid contributions from Saquon Barkley, who ran for 64 yards and caught eight passes for 79 yards and a touchdown for good measure. The issue for New York today was its defense, which got absolutely shredded by Matthew Stafford, who torched them for 342 yards and three touchdowns.

Despite the competitive effort, the end result didn’t change, which was yet another loss for Shurmur and company. Since taking the reins in New York a year ago, Shurmur has gone 7-17 with the Giants, which is a massive disappointment for a franchise that is used to being perennial winners.

This is not entirely a shock for Shurmur, who was previously a losing head coach with the Cleveland Browns, but had rebuilt his stock with strong tenures as the offensive coordinator for Eagles and Vikings before landing in New York. The key to the Shurmur decision will lie with his rookie quarterback, however, as Jones’ development will determine whether or not Shurmur should return.

Next: Jets need to start selling after latest loss

Jones has struggled mightily with ball security, and he did lose a fumble today, but this effort was definitely a step in the right direction. If it looks like Jones has regressed again by the end of the season, the Giants owe it to their young signal caller to consider a coaching change to bring in someone who can get the best out of their future franchise quarterback.
