Bills have the cap space to make Josh Allen better in 2020

Buffalo Bills, NFL Free Agency

The Buffalo Bills have a big offseason ahead of them. Loaded with cap space, they can land pieces in free agency to make quarterback Josh Allen better.

The Buffalo Bills can make some big moves in free agency this spring.

Buffalo is coming off its second AFC playoff berth in the last three seasons under head coach Sean McDermott. Before McDermott’s arrival in Orchard Park, Buffalo hadn’t reached the NFL playoffs since getting Music City Miracle-d in Nashville during the 1999 season. Though they haven’t won a playoff game since Jim Kelly was under center, Buffalo has a great chance to win in January 2021.

The Bills have built a great culture the last few years and seem to have something cooking at the quarterback position in Josh Allen. The second-year pro out of the University of Wyoming has a powerful right arm and great mobility. He’s come a long way of late under offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who will be an NFL head coach one day.

For now, it’s all about making Allen the best quarterback possible.

Fortunately for the young signal-caller, the Bills are swimming in cap space. They have roughly $83.1 million to work with this spring, with is the fourth-most in the NFL entering the new league year. Given Buffalo’s small market nature and cold climate, the Bills’ front office will have to pay a premium to get anyone good.

So who should it pursue this offseason to make Allen better?

Allen needs a No. 1 wide receiver. Bills general manager Brandon Beane can draft one, but Buffalo’s first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft won’t be until No. 22 overall. Plus, this is an incredibly deep receiver class, arguably the deepest in the history of the draft. In terms of a veteran free-agent the need to pursue, go get a guy like Amari Cooper of the Dallas Cowboys.

With Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green expected to get tagged, Cooper is the premier wide receiver who will be hitting the market. He may go back to Dallas, but the Cowboys have to figure out how to keep its two other star free agents in quarterback Dak Prescott and defensive back Byron Jones. Buffalo can outbid Dallas.

Whether is a receiver like Cooper, a defensive back like Jones or an offensive lineman like Jack Conklin of the Tennessee Titans, adding any of these Pro Bowl-caliber players into the fold will help Buffalo stay in playoff contention, as well as give Allen even more confidence to be the best player he can possibly be for Bills Mafia.

It’s a big year for Buffalo, but the team is ready for it.
