It’s been a good week for Patrick Mahomes.

Is there anything Patrick Mahomes isn’t good at? Days after signing the richest contract in sports history, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback showed he’s also pretty good on the links.

Mahomes was practicing ahead of his round at the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe that begins on July 10, casually draining a putt that was reminiscent of someone on the PGA Tour. And while I’m excited to see Tiger Woods at next week’s Memorial Tournament, Mahomes may be able to hang with him for at least the front nine on a good day.

In addition to being the best quarterback in the NFL, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is also a great golfer, as he showed off sinking this insane putt.

Mahomes was a three-sport star at Whitehouse High School where it looked like he might follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue a professional baseball career, but he was also the best basketball player on his team and, well, he was a pretty solid football player too.

As part of the mega-extension Mahomes signed that will lock him up with the Chiefs for the next 12 years when factoring the two years remaining on his rookie deal, he can’t do much physical activity until 2031.

Mahomes joked he can’t play basketball or do anything like ride a jet ski that could potentially leave the half-billion-dollar man with an injury. But golf is one of the safest sports Mahomes can still play. There’s no contact and it still satisfies that competitive desire all great athletes have.

With putts like this, you have to wonder if Mahomes could pick up golf as a serious hobby and make a run at participating in more Pro-Am tournaments like the ACC before going the Tony Romo route and trying to make the cut at tournaments and earn your tour card.

And wouldn’t you know it, Romo is the betting favorite to win this weekend?

It may be worth throwing a few bucks down on Mahomes because he’s never been afraid of being the underdog, and as he showed during the postseason last year, he’s pretty good when he falls behind early. So don’t be dismayed if he’s a few strokes off the lead after Friday.

The Kansas City Chiefs are going to be forced to make some tough moves following the 2020 season.

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ plan went to perfection last season. The team was able to spend money on elite talent outside the quarterback position. Patrick Mahomes was still on his rookie deal and that meant financial flexibility.

That is obviously set to change quick after Mahomes signed his 10-year, $450 million extension. His cap hit is already set to jump from $5.3 million in 2020 to $24.8 million in 2021. Factor in Frank Clark’s deal, Tyrann Mathieu’s money, and a potential extension for Chris Jones and money is going to be tight.

The honeymoon period will soon be over for the Chiefs and the true reality of the future of the team will set in after the 2020 season. Let’s look at three players who may need to be let go just to stay under the cap in 2021.

3

Breeland Speaks

DE

Breeland Speaks is a 2018 second-round draft pick by the Chiefs who did not appear in a single game during the 2019 season due to suspension and injury.

Speaks missed out on the excitement of the season and is now facing a crucial season in 2020 to prove himself. However, it may be too late for him in Kansas City.

The Chiefs can release Speaks before the 2021 season and save $1.3 million. This is not a monumental move for the Chiefs, but every dollar counts when trying to have the most efficient roster and remain under the salary cap.

It is also the final year of Speaks’ deal and cutting him for the savings is the obvious move if the team has no intention of signing him to an extension. The way his career has gone to this point seems to take away any confidence in an extension even being considered.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a plan in place for reduced capacity crowds.

If Arrowhead Stadium isn’t packed to the brim this year, the Kansas City Chiefs have that covered.

The reigning Super Bowl champions announced on Wednesday what their plans were if NFL games were to be paid with reduced capacity crowds. The Chiefs sent out a detailed message on their team website about what season ticket holders should expect if social distancing results in sparsely attended games.

“People around the country and around the world are getting accustomed to a constantly changing environment and the same goes for all of us in Chiefs Kingdom,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said.

“While our goal all offseason was to have a full stadium as we begin our Super Bowl title defense, it is out of consideration of the health and safety of our fans, employees, coaches and players that we move forward with a reduced-capacity plan that adheres to local guidelines and expert recommendations.”

“As we looked at ways to navigate this unusual season, our first priority was to offer a fair and flexible plan for our loyal and valued Season Ticket Members, and we believe we accomplished that. While it will be a different experience for everyone, we are looking forward to welcoming fans to Arrowhead this fall.”

Here are the plans in place for reduced crowds at Arrowhead Stadium.

Per the post on the Chiefs’ team site:

STMs will be automatically included in a single-game presale for any available seats in 2020, once a final capacity is determined.

Their credit can be utilized to purchase single-game tickets for a reduced-capacity 2020 season, if they choose.

They will receive their 2020 Season Ticket Member box with exclusive gifts.

STM pricing will remain flat for 2021 and they will accrue a year of STM tenure for the 2020 season, regardless of if they attend any games or not in 2020.

In the event that the club is permitted to host a full-capacity crowd for any potential playoff games, STMs that did not opt for a refund will be given the first opportunity to purchase their seats.

Parking or hospitality club passes purchased as part of a Season Ticket Membership can be managed exactly like tickets – either as a credit for 2021 or a full refund, if requested.

As expected, the season ticket members have top priority in all this. Having the 2020 season payment automatically be deferred to the 2021 campaign is a heads up move, albeit an expected one. Even if members of Chiefs Kingdom want to opt-out of 2020 and get a refund, they will still be able to have their season tickets at their same seats in 2021.

Next: These 5 NFL teams are going to win the Super Bowl soon

This looks to be a well-thought-out message from a first-class organization like the Chiefs. Hopefully, other organizations take the Chiefs’ lead here an enact similar protocols at their respective stadiums. Though every part of the country has been impacted by the coronavirus differently, all parts of the United States have been majorly impacted by COVID-19.

With the Chiefs leading by example, expect other organizations to follow suit.

After the Patrick Mahomes contract, the Chiefs need a reliable backup QB. Enter Colin Kaepernick.

With a 10-year, $503 million contract extension for Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs locked in the face of their franchise through 2031. This deal — with $477 million in guarantee mechanisms — is a risky one due to its length, but barring injury or unlikely/unexpected regression from a bona fide superstar, the Chiefs are set at starting quarterback for the next 12 years.

However, as unlikely as it is for a 24-year-old who’s won an MVP award and a Super Bowl ring within his first two years as an NFL starter to regress in the middle of his prime, it’s that “barring injury” part that should concern the Chiefs.

As thrilling as their playoff run was, filled with comeback win after comeback win, there was a point last year when Kansas City’s season was up in the air. The reason? Mahomes was dealing with a dislocated patella, forcing him to miss two games and play several more through the injury.

To be fair, the Chiefs actually fared okay without Mahomes. When backup QB Matt Moore took over for an injured Mahomes in Week 7, he helped lead KC to a 30-6 win over the Denver Broncos, going 10-of-19 for 117 yards and a touchdown pass. In Week 8, his first start, he tallied 267 yards and two TDs in a close loss to the Green Bay Packers, and the following week, he led the Chiefs to a 26-23 victory over the Minnesota Vikings with 275 passing yards and a touchdown.

However, the Broncos were miserable last year, and the Chiefs were already up 10-6 with the ball on Denver’s five-yard line when Mahomes got hurt. Moore performed well enough in his two starts to help Kansas City get the 1-1 split without their superstar, but that certainly wasn’t enough to prove he deserves to be “the guy” behind Mahomes for a Super Bowl contender. More importantly, Moore is no longer on the roster, leaving the likes of Chad Henne and Jordan Ta’amu as emergency options.

Colin Kaepernick deserves the chance to be that guy for the Chiefs.

Colin Kaepernick hasn’t played since the 2016 NFL season, but for a team that needs a reliable backup if such a high portion of the salary cap goes down, he’s one of the best options available. Why not keep the good vibes flowing after Mahomes’ gaudy extension by signing the talented outcast whose silent protests made him a scapegoat for the league and are only now being revealed for the heroic stance they actually represented?

The Chiefs are evaluating any potential backup from a position of power thanks to Mahomes’ incredible talent, and signing Kaepernick would be a perfect way to welcome him back into the league and get his feet wet again.

He also makes sense from a football perspective, not only because he’d be cheap for a team devoting a large portion of its salary cap to one player, but also because he’d be a tremendous fit in Andy Reid’s dynamic offense. His mobility and arm strength could make him a natural addition, and getting to learn from Mahomes and watch him work would only raise that ceiling.

The Chiefs have their guy under center for the foreseeable future, but injury can strike at any moment. Having a guy to back Mahomes up like Kaep, who’s played under pressure with six playoff games and a Super Bowl appearance under his belt, would be a luxury and potential high-reward situation if they ever needed to turn to their backup.

It could be Kaepernick’s gateway back into the league too, since teams still seem hesitant to welcome him back. Whether that’s due to the anthem protests, the media attention or the fact that he hasn’t played professional football since 2016 is unclear, but whatever the reason, the NFL’s blackballing of Colin Kaepernick needs to end. After the Mahomes contract, the Chiefs are as good a landing spot as any.

If you expected Josh Allen’s contract to come close to Patrick Mahomes’, you’re in for disappointment.

The Kansas Chiefs shocked the world by signing Patrick Mahomes to a 10-year contract worth potentially up to $500 million, an incomprehensible number and the largest contract in sports history.

There are tons of angles to consider here: How does the contract compare to other top-paid athletes? Is Mahomes, or any NFL player for that matter, worth the money? Considering the latter question, some players may come to mind in Mahomes’ region, but Josh Allen is not one of them.

If you wanted to be sure, though, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News let us all know that is the case. Skurski cites Mahomes’ Super Bowl trophy, MVP award and reputation as one of the league’s fastest rising quarterbacks in history as reasons for that. Allen is a good quarterback with a bright future, but not quite with merit like Mahomes. As such, he will come nowhere close to Mahomes’ contract when an extension is in store.

Josh Allen is unlikely to receive an offer from the Bills like Patrick Mahomes’.

Skurski knows that too, which he pointed out in his Buffalo News article.

Drawing any conclusions on what Mahomes’ contract might mean for Allen is, at this point, a waste of time.

If discussing the implications is pointless, then why do it?

Well, that’s not for us to decide. Regardless, Skurski does make some interesting points, primarily in what Mahomes’ contract means for two other quarterbacks due to be paid, Dak Prescott and DeShaun Watson, while drawing insightful comparisons as well.

Maybe the headline should have been a little different, though.

Patrick Mahomes is a bigger bargain than Ryan Tannehill.

The numbers on the contract extension Patrick Mahomes got from the Kansas City Chiefs are staggering. The new 10-year deal makes it a 12-year commitment in total, worth just over $500 million at the fully fleshed out potential.

The Chiefs had Mahomes under control for two more years, so he is getting $45 million per year in new money on a 10-year, $450 million extension. He was already due $27.63 million over the next two years, which extends into a window of the free agent deals other quarterbacks got this offseason.

Ryan Tannehill had the best year of his career with the Tennessee Titans last year, ahead of hitting free agency. Then, instead of especially pursuing anyone else (Tom Brady, Philip Rivers), the Titans re-signed him to a four-year, $118 million contract ($62 million guaranteed).

After fleshing out the early known details of Mahomes’ contract, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk offered a couple of interesting tidbits.

Also, Mahomes will make $63.08 million over the first three years of the deal. Tannehill will make $91 million over the first three years of his deal.

— ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) July 7, 2020

Over the next three and four years, the full span of his contract in the latter case, Tannehill is slated to make more in raw dollars than Mahomes. Of course Mahomes, for better or worse as the salary cap rises and the quarterback market encroaches on him, will have a lot of time and money left on his deal at that point. Tannehill might be looking for a job.

The idea Tannehill will see all $118 million of his contract is foolish and unlikely, especially if he doesn’t play nearly as well as he did in 2019. But the broader point still stands. The Titans ponied up to pay Tannehill coming off a career year, rooted in the name of continuity with fingers crossed he’ll keep playing at a high level. The Chiefs, on the other hand, have made a long-term investment in Mahomes, who could become the best quarterback the NFL has ever seen.

Dak Prescott is next in line to get paid. What are the Dallas Cowboys going to pay him after watching Patrick Mahomes get $503 million on Monday.

If you turn down your TV and listen quietly, you can hear screaming. It’s coming from Dallas, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Jones saw Patrick Mahomes signing a 10-year, $503 million extension with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, destroying the quarterback market in unfathomable ways. Why does Jones care? Because his quarterback, Dak Prescott, is on the franchise tag.

In fact, Prescott and the Cowboys have until July 15 to find common ground on a long-term deal or Prescott will play the 2020 season on the tag. Afterwards, he’ll be slated for unrestricted free agency in March ’21.

What will Dak Prescott’s contract look like with the Dallas Cowboys?

Should the sides finally agree on a deal, Prescott made serious additional money by waiting for Mahomes to get his extension done. Before Mahomes signed, the records for quarterbacks were $35 million annually (Russell Wilson) and $110 million guaranteed (Jared Goff). Now? Mahomes earned $477 million guaranteed and $45 million annually once the extension begins in 2022.

While Prescott won’t approach Mahomes’ numbers — nor will anybody for at least a few years — he should easily surpass the previous benchmarks set by Wilson and Goff.

Looking at the big picture, Prescott shouldn’t struggle to and a contract worth $40 million per year. The contract length likely isn’t as long, but something in the neighborhood of six years and $240 million with $150-170 million guaranteed seems reasonable.

Just yesterday, that would have been absolutely laughable.

Jerry Jones had the opportunity to sign Prescott before Wilson, Goff and Carson Wentz did their deals last offseason. Instead, he waited while signing running back Ezekiel Elliott and wide receiver Amari Cooper.

Those decisions are going to be very, very costly.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Patrick Mahomes to a 10-year contract extension worth $503 million.

Before Monday afternoon, no NFL player had ever signed a contract worth $250 million. Patrick Mahomes more than doubled that number.

The Kansas City Chiefs extended their superstar quarterback on a 10-year deal, keeping him through the 2031 season. Mahomes can earn up to $503 million, with $140 million injury guaranteed and $477 million guaranteed with mechanisms in place. As explained by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Chiefs must guaranteed Mahomes’ deal a year ahead of time.

This Patrick Mahomes highlight video shows how ridiculously great he is

So why did the Chiefs pay Mahomes such an ungodly sum? Well, if you’ve never seen him play, here’s a five-minute video to help you understand.

Mahomes was drafted with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 Draft by Kansas City, who moved up 17 spots to land him. After sitting behind Alex Smith as a rookie, Mahomes stormed onto the scene in 2018, throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns en route to the NFL MVP award.

In 2019, Mahomes was once again brilliant, this time leading the Chiefs to the Super Bowl. He was also named Super Bowl LIV MVP.

Mahomes will be signed through his age-36 season, putting him in a Chiefs uniform through most of, if not his entire career. Kansas City should be staying in the title conversation throughout that period, considering Mahomes is a generational talent at the game’s most important position.

Kansas City emptied the piggy bank on Monday, but we’re guessing the Chiefs don’t have any buyer’s remorse.

Patrick Mahomes’ big pay day just keeps getting better and better.

Earlier on Monday, it was “over $400 million.” A few hours later, it was “$450 million.” Now, it appears Patrick Mahomes is in line for up to $503 million on his 10-year contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs, with $477 million of it guaranteed.

That’s right, folks. Patrick Mahomes’ expected payday could very well reach half a billion dollars.

This jaw-dropping news comes from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, who reports the $477 million comes in guarantee mechanisms and “gives the ability for Mahomes to have outs if the guarantee mechanisms aren’t exercised.”

The deal also comes with a no-trade clause, essentially ensuring the Super Bowl-winning face of the franchise is a Chief for life.

Patrick Mahomes’ unprecedented extension is the largest in sports history, but he absolutely deserves it.

It’s hard to wrap one’s head around the numbers: This 24-year-old QB will be locked in with Kansas City for the next 12 years, earning $27.6 million over the next two seasons before the 10-year extension worth up to $503 million kicks in. It will run through 2031, when Mahomes will be 35 years old.

Those figures are staggering, but if anyone has the right combination of talent, results and outright meaning to a fanbase and a sports franchise, it’s Mahomes. After just two seasons as a full-time starting quarterback in the NFL, he’s racked up two Pro Bowl appearances, a First-Team All-Pro selection, the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award, an MVP award and now, a Super Bowl MVP and Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Mahomes has thrown for 76 touchdowns in 30 starts in the last two years, along with 9,128 yards and four rushing TDs. His heroics were undeniable throughout Kansas City’s championship run last season, when he masterfully orchestrated comeback win after comeback win. When all is said and done, he has a chance to go down as the greatest quarterback of all time.

There’s a long way to go until we get to that conversation, but after years of the Chiefs wandering the desert without a quarterback, Patrick Mahomes ended the drought. It’s no wonder they are more than happy to make it rain.

Patrick Mahomes is in Kansas City to stay after signing a monster extension with the Chiefs.

As if Chiefs fans weren’t fired up enough about Patrick Mahomes new contract extension, the king of K.C. tweeted out a hype video to the masses.

At just 24 years old, being signed through the 2031 season sounds like an eternity. Yet if the Chiefs are to embark upon the dynasty so many expect from them, locking up their franchise quarterback is the perfect place to start.

Mahomes deal, which adds 10 years to his current contract, should be worth somewhere in the realm of $450 million. That’s not chump change, but it could be argued he’s worth even more in the grand scheme of things.

Patrick Mahomes fires up Chiefs fans with hype video after extension.

Mahomes has already exceeded the wildest expectations of Andy Reid and Brett Veach when they drafted him in 2017. Yet, that’s precisely where this video starts, reminding Chicago Bears fans yet again that they passed on two of the greatest QBs of their generation for Mitchell Trubisky. For Chiefs fans, though, such a flashback brings nothing but euphoria.

With or without fans in 2020, the Chiefs are set up for a decade of dominance. This is rarified air for a franchise that, before last season, hadn’t won a Super Bowl in 50 years. But with Tom Brady’s twilight years upon us, and the Patriots run of dominance seemingly over (sorry, Cam), there’s nothing keeping the Chiefs from AFC supremacy.

Mahomes, already with an MVP, Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP under his belt, has entered the football stratosphere with nowhere to go but up. One hype video can’t properly depict just how far he’s come in just a few short years, and Chiefs fans are ready for the next step of this journey.
