Who is the biggest NFL Draft bust for each team over the past decade?

There may not be a more heavily scrutinized process in football than the NFL Draft. The end of every draft brings instant reaction declaring winners and losers mere moments after the clock stopped.

Not all picks are hits and plenty end up being abject disasters. Which player has been the worst draft pick for each NFL team over the past decade? Read on to find out.

Arizona Cardinals: QB Josh Rosen (2018 1st Round, No. 10)

This one was pretty easy since seeing a team give up on a quarterback they took in the top 10 after one year is extremely rare. That happened to Josh Rosen, who was so bad that the Arizona Cardinals took Kyler Murray with the top pick in the 2019 draft while flipping Rosen to Miami. Rosen couldn’t beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick with the Dolphins, further confirming the disaster potential of this pick.

Atlanta Falcons: C Peter Konz (2012 2nd Round, No. 55)

Taking a Wisconsin offensive lineman is usually a recipe for success, but that wasn’t the case with Peter Konz. The Falcons took Konz with their second-round pick in 2012 and he was out of football after just three years.

Baltimore Ravens: WR Breshad Perriman (2015 1st Round, No. 26)

For an organization that usually crushes the draft, Breshad Perriman was a rare miss. The Ravens fell in love with Perriman’s deep speed but he fizzled in Baltimore, missing his rookie year due to injury and getting cut after catching 43 passes over two seasons. Perriman has bounced around the league since then and is hoping for a post-hype breakout with the New York Jets.

Buffalo Bills: QB EJ Manuel (2013 1st Round, No. 16)

The 2013 NFL Draft was a bad one for quarterbacks. Despite a weak crop, the Buffalo Bills reached for EJ Manuel in the first round in the hopes he would become a franchise passer. The move didn’t work out as Manuel couldn’t win the starting job after his rookie year, struggling with accuracy and losing time to the likes of Kyle Orton and Tyrod Taylor. Buffalo let Taylor go after the end of his rookie contract and he spent a few years as a backup in Oakland before retiring.

The Jacksonville Jaguars need to tank for Trevor Lawrence, straight up.

Losing is never fun, but it’s something the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise has grown accustomed to for the last decade-plus. Outside of the magical 2017 Sacksonville defense, what does North Florida’s professional football team have to show for itself. The ghastly two-toned helmets are gone and Duval County might lose its team in a few years if the team doesn’t turn itself around.

Though we love Gardner Minshew as a starting quarterback and everything he personifies, the Jaguars have to understand he’s not going to be the white knight rockin’ jorts to keep the team in Jacksonville. If they want their knight in shining armor and not recurring ballads of Sir Blake Bortles, the Dark Knight of Garbage Time, the Jaguars need to tank for Trevor Lawrence in 2020.

The hype on the Clemson Tigers junior quarterback is real. He has the chance to be the best NFL quarterback prospect since John Elway came out of Stanford back in 1983. Already, he’ll be the best since Andrew Luck came out of Stanford in 2012 and might surpass Peyton Manning coming out of Tennessee in 1998 if Lawrence’s junior season goes according to plan.

Would tanking for Trevor be shameless? Well, it wouldn’t be the most regrettable to happen in Duval County before. Every Dawg or Gator who has been to The Cocktail Party has a story.

Trevor Lawrence can be the savior the Jacksonville Jaguars are in dire need of.

It’s understandable how the act of tanking is the most counterintuitive thing you could ever do in football. If you don’t play hard, you’ll either get hurt or put terrible stuff on tape. Either way, it doesn’t end well for the player in his next NFL venture. As for the coaching staff, losing on purpose is the quickest way out of a job. They’re trying to win every game, too.

All that aside, Lawrence is the passing talent worth doing a tongue-in-cheek tank job for. The 2011 Indianapolis Colts were deplorably bad. Yes, it did cost head coach Jim Caldwell and general manager Bill Polian their jobs, but it also gave them Luck.

Admittedly, it is an absurd amount of pressure to save a franchise that looks to be inevitably on the move. Not everyone can do that, but Manning had that power in Indianapolis.

Jacksonville might be a smaller NFL market, but it is a major media market in college sports. Though he plays in the ACC, everybody in Jacksonville knows darn well what Lawrence can do with the football in his hands. If his Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney thought Deshaun Watson was Michael Jordan, that has to mean Lawrence is LeBron James, right? We can only it’s the case.

If the Jaguars are bad enough to be picking near the top of the 2021 NFL Draft, they need to do whatever is necessary to get the No. 1 pick to draft Lawrence. You’re talking about a Tony Boselli, Jalen Ramsey-level talent here, but at the most important position on the field. By year two in the NFL, he’ll already be better than Mark Brunell or David Garrard ever were for London’s Finest.

Tanking sucks for everyone involved, but Trevor Lawrence is worth it if you’re Jacksonville.

The 2020 NFL Draft may be in the rearview mirror, but now we have the 2021 NFL Draft to look forward to! These five NFL teams are already circling the date.

The NFL Draft is a time for teams who need to address certain positions on their roster to do so. They have free agency the month prior to try and fill those needs, but the draft gives them a chance to find young talent who they’ll – if all goes according to plan – have four or five years of control over.

While the 2020 Draft is still fresh in everyone’s minds, some teams are already dreaming of the 2021 NFL Draft and the players they can lock down in said draft.

5

New England Patriots

AFC East

The New England Patriots typically don’t draft until late in the first round, but 2020 is going to be a new era for them. They might not be bad in 2020, especially with Bill Belichick as their head coach and still having a very good defense at their disposal.

The Patriots can’t seriously think Jarrett Stidham is the long-term answer, however, so it wouldn’t be shocking for them to trade up in 2021 even if they do have a respectable record. Having just one down year between Tom Brady and someone like Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields would be ideal for the Pats and they’ll be eagerly awaiting the 2021 draft so that they can try to land their next quarterback of the next two decades.

If nothing else, this gives New England a chance to beef up some of its other weak positions such as offensive line and wide receiver should they sign a free agent like Andy Dalton next offseason.

The 2020 NFL Draft is in the books, but these four teams failed to address a major position of need on their roster.

The draft is a time for teams to find young talent at positions of need and to also add depth. They have the opportunity to do so in free agency as well, which takes place a month prior to the draft.

Which four teams missed out on some major needs in this year’s draft?

CINCINNATI BENGALS

The Bengals held the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and as a surprise to no one, took Joe Burrow with their first pick. Burrow fills the quarterback need the Bengals had and while they drafted talent at wide receiver, they really could have used a tight end. They didn’t draft one.

As of now, the only tight end that’s recognizable on the Bengals’ roster is C.J. Uzomah, who is heading into year six. Uzomah has been decent for Cincinnati, but the team could have really used a top-tier upgrade.

The Bengals also should have drafted an offensive lineman sooner than the sixth round because it’s going to be hard for Burrow to succeed when he’s getting pressured constantly. Landing Burrow and Tee Higgins was a nice start for Cincinnati, but it didn’t fill some of its other biggest needs in order to help Burrow succeed.

Looking ahead to the 2021 NFL Draft now, these five prospects should already be on the Green Bay Packers’ radar.

After trading up to draft quarterback Jordan Love in the first round and taking running back A.J. Dillon in the second round, the immediate grades on the Green Bay Packers’ 2020 draft haul were not good. A major need a wide receiver was completely ignored, and a parallel need at linebacker saw one late-round pick to help it.

Rather than add immediate help for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, or more proactively look to help a run defense that was not good last year, general manager Brian Gutekunst devoted premium draft picks to an eye beyond 2020. Time will tell if he was right, but the window to win while Rodgers is under center is narrowing and the 2021 draft looks to be even more important to that effort now.

Plans for the 2021 draft are in the infant stages, but these five prospects should already be on the Packers’ radar.

5. Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame

Long-time Packers’ left tackle David Bakhtiari is heading into the final year of his contract. The price to keep him next March has gone up , with the deal Laremy Tunsil just got from the Houston Texans. So offensive tackle is sure to be on the first-round radar in the 2021 draft.

In some very early 2021 mock drafts that are already out, Eichenberg is tabbed to go off the board in the top half of the first round. But two mocks, from Neil Driscoll of Pro Football Network and Cleveland.com’s Matt Goul, have him going to the Packers with a pick somewhere in the 20’s.

Eichenberg step in right away at right tackle and form a long-term pair with a re-signed Bakhtiari, who still won’t even turn 30 until early in the 2021 season and will be plenty worth a lucrative commitment. But heading into his third year as a starter for the Fighting Irish, Eichenberg could also be drafted to replace Bakhtiari immediately.

Now that the NFL Draft is behind us, let’s look ahead at what the results mean for fantasy football.

After seven rounds and 255 picks, the newest class of rookies have arrived in the NFL. Some rosters have been revamped, others have been fortified, and then there’s the Green Bay Packers. This isn’t going to be another one of those million posts out there bashing the Packers for willingly engaging in a game of chicken with one of the best quarterbacks of all-time; what ends up happening in Green Bay is yet to be seen.

What is worth mentioning is how Jordan Love and the 254 other players drafted impact fantasy football in the coming years. Love won’t have an immediate impact (outside of whatever locker room drama swells because of his arrival), rather the relevant fantasy football conversation to have in the aftermath of the draft is how the players already on your draft board are affected by their new teammates.

If you only do redrafts in fantasy football, you probably aren’t worried too much. But if you’re in a dynasty or keeper league, last week’s NFL Draft may have been a huge bust or boom for your squad.

Here are the biggest fantasy winners and losers after the 2020 NFL Draft.

*Note: All fantasy points are in PPR format.

Fantasy Football Winner: Carson Wentz

Carson Wentz became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 4,000 yards without any of his receivers earning 500 or more receiving yards. Tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert led the Eagles with 916 and 607 receiving yards, respectively, while running back Miles Sanders’ 509 receiving yards were the third-most on the team. Those three also were the top ball-catchers in Philadelphia.

A wide receiver in the first round (TCU’s Jalen Reagor) was a necessity. They also traded for Marquise Goodwin during the draft.

At the same time, grabbing quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round came as a major surprise, and is possibly a message to Wentz himself, who has dealt with his fair share of injuries. But we’ve seen what Wentz can do when he is fully healthy.

Wentz was QB9 last season (13th in points per game). In 2017, he put up the second-most fantasy points per game and was in the MVP conversation before his season ended.

The Eagles’ receiving core is a far cry from the Cowboys, who added CeeDee Lamb from Oklahoma in the first round, but on paper, it is an improvement from last season.

There will be a few excellent quarterbacks entering the 2021 NFL Draft. Here are the five NFL teams most likely to draft one this time next spring.

As it is with every NFL Draft, a handful of teams were able to address their quarterbacking issues by drafting a potential franchise star in the first round. Four quarterbacks were taken last Thursday night in the 2020 NFL Draft. Joe Burrow went to the Cincinnati Bengals, Tua Tagovailoa joined the Miami Dolphins, Justin Herbert is a Los Angeles Charger and Jordan Love is a Green Bay Packer.

Burrow, Tagovailoa and Herbert will push for starts as rookies with the respective teams, while Love bides his time playing behind a future Pro Football Hall of Famer in Aaron Rodgers. Either way, all four of those franchises have appropriately addressed their quarterbacking concerns for the future. But what about teams who didn’t really do that this offseason? Who are they?

No, we’re not going to have a quarterbacking frenzy quite like we did in March. However, there will be a handful of teams entering the 2021 NFL Draft next year who will need to seriously consider their future at the quarterback position. Some of those teams need a guy like Burrow, Tagovailoa or Herbert who can play meaningful snaps as rookies, while others will look for a project like Love.

We’re a year out, but here are five teams who could be looking for a franchise quarterback in 2021.

5

Detroit Lions

NFC North

Many people thought the Detroit Lions could look for a successor to Matthew Stafford at No. 3 in the 2020 NFL Draft. Tagovailoa was the guy most closely associated with the Lions in the top three. However, Detroit is in win-now mode under the current regime, so they opted to draft the best defensive back in the draft in Ohio State Buckeyes cornerback Jeffrey Okudah at No. 3.

Should the Lions be respectable this year, which they might have been a season ago had Stafford not gotten hurt mid-season, head coach Matt Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn might get to keep their jobs. If it’s another disastrous year in the Motor City, both key members of the Lions’ brass will be gone. This would line up perfectly for the Lions to move off Stafford entering 2021.

While Stafford is under contract through his age-34 season in 2022, Detroit has a potential out after next season. If he’s too banged up for their liking or Detroit truly wants to hit the reset button, they will be in a great position to do so. The Lions could be bad enough again to draft Stafford’s successor, regardless of if there is a regime change upstairs or not.

Moving off Stafford could be incredibly difficult for the Lions to do. While he hasn’t won a division or a playoff game in 11 years as the starting quarterback, he’s been a model of consistency since being taken No. 1 overall out of Georgia in 2009. If healthy entering 2021, the Lions may continue to roll with him, unless they have the No. 1 overall pick again, which, could you really blame them?

2021 NFL Draft Big Board features Trevor Lawrence at No. 1, Alabama having the most prospects in the first round and three quarterbacks mocked in the first.

The 2020 NFL Draft is over so it’s time to talk about the 2021 NFL Draft. Finally, we can talk about Trevor Lawrence as an NFL Draft prospect and not prefacing everything with “when he’s eligible for the draft…” but the hype is real for the Clemson quarterback who has a chance to be the best prospect at the position ever.

That type of hyperbole isn’t just limited to Lawrence. Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell is a rising junior who is coming off a season that saw him become the first sophomore to win the Outland Trophy. He’ll likely make it back-to-back wins, joining former Nebraska center Dave Rimington as the only players do that since the award’s inception in 1946. He’s going to be compared to Hall of Famers just like Lawrence during the college season and pre-draft process.

After tying a record with 14 draft picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, LSU receiver Ja’Marr Chase should be the first Tigers player off the board next year as the top receiver in the class. After winning the Biletnikoff as a sophomore, Chase has a chance to be the rare receiver taken in the first three picks.

Alabama had nine players picked in the 2020 NFL Draft but if my 2021 NFL Draft Big Board is any indication, the Crimson Tide could contend for a record for first-round picks. I have seven Alabama football players in the top 27. Chances are they won’t have seven first-round picks, but as always, the talent is rich in Tuscaloosa.

2021 NFL Draft Big Board: Trevor Lawrence tops class

1

Lawrence would have been the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft over Kyler Murray and potentially ahead of Joe Burrow in the 2020 Draft if the Clemson star was eligible. He’ll be eligible for the 2021 NFL Draft and will be the No. 1 pick barring catastrophic injury. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Lawrence is the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck and perhaps ahead of the likes of Peyton Manning and John Elway when he’s announced as the top pick next spring.

Lawrence’s college production speaks for itself. After breaking the freshman record with 30 touchdown passes and leading Clemson to the national championship, he had a sophomore slump in the first half of 20219. He quickly broke out of that and looked just like the wunderkind that torched secondaries in 2018.

The lack of a full offseason plan, including spring practice and what could be a truncated training camp and potentially an altered regular season, isn’t ideal for a developing prospect, but it’s not like Lawrence is sitting on the couch watching Netflix either. After losing for the first time since high school in the title game to Burrow and LSU last season, expect Lawrence to be laser-focused and get Clemson back to the title game and for him to be one of the leading Heisman contenders, if not the outright favorite.

Lawrence combines prototypical size with a strong and accurate arm and improved athleticism and mobility. He is the most talented but also very tough, smart and works as hard as anyone.

He is the total package and absolutely worth tanking for in order to get the top pick.

The 2020 NFL Draft is in the books, and here’s how the rookie class of quarterbacks rank based on their situation.

The 2020 NFL Draft went virtual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the offseason will also be virtual until further notice. So rookie quarterbacks will be challenged to make a quick transition, with only mental reps to really get done right now.

Three quarterbacks went in the top-six this year. As was easily expected, Joe Burrow went No. 1 to the Cincinnati Bengals, Tua Tagovailoa went No. 5 to the Miami Dolphins and Justin Herbert went to the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 6. A fourth signal caller went in the opening round, as the Green Bay Packers moved up to No. 26 to take Jordan Love.

At the end of the three days, seven rounds and 255 picks, 10 quarterbacks were drafted this year.

Here’s how they rank based on the situation they’re coming into.

1. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers

Opinions on Herbert range from seeing his upside to focusing on his flaws, but he has landed in a very good situation. The Chargers don’t have to rush him into the lineup, with Tyrod Taylor in line to start, so he can learn an NFL offense and be ready to go if needed during the season.

The Chargers added pieces to what was already a top-tier defense this offseason, and the set of weapons around the quarterback is formidable. Left tackle was not addressed in the draft, but most of the prominent pieces of a team that went 12-4 in 2018 remain in place.

There’s a chance Herbert earns the starting job right away. But regardless, his situation stands above the rest in this year’s rookie quarterback class.

The Green Bay Packers may have really wanted Jordan Love, but it sounds like they definitely panicked a bit in their move up to get him in the first round.

Nobody was going to draft Jordan Love in the first round, except the Green Bay Packers.

Though four quarterbacks went in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, it took a while for the Utah State product to come off the board. The Packers traded up from No. 30 to No. 26 with the Miami Dolphins to draft Love late into Thursday night. While they certainly coveted him, there was no market for him in the first round and the Packers clearly panicked in their efforts to get him.

According to The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Packers were set on drafting Love in the first round and were looking to do everything in their power to trade up to get him. They felt a team like the Indianapolis Colts could trade back into the first round, but nothing ever materialized. Green Bay even tried to move up to No. 25 in a deal with the Seattle Seahawks for him.

Indianapolis ended up taking wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. out of USC at No. 34 instead of moving back into the first round for Love. While Pittman can come in and help the Indianapolis offense right away, Love won’t even be expected to get anything close to serious playing time for at least a few years in Green Bay. They still have a perennial Pro Bowler in Aaron Rodgers!

So the Packers were infinitely ridiculed for this draft-day decision on Thursday night, and rightfully so. This is a team that is in win-now mode and just played in the NFC Championship. Instead of getting Rodgers the weapons he needs or the defensive personnel to back him up in a chase for a title, the Packers prioritized their future by taking a serious developmental project at quarterback.

Though Love did show promise during his sophomore year at Utah State, that was two years ago. Once the entire Aggies staff followed Matt Wells to the Texas Tech job ahead of last season, Love’s play and production cratered. While having the luxury of a fifth-year option at their disposal is key in all this, Green Bay could have just stayed at No. 30 and not giving the Dolphins another pick.

Next: Top five best and worst draft picks by number drafted

If Love becomes the next Rodgers, Brett Favre or Bart Starr in Titletown, then the move up to get him was absolutely worth it. But until he becomes an MVP-level quarterback and leads the Packers to the Super Bowl, it’ll be challenging for everyone to not pile on their botch-job of a 2020 NFL Draft.
