Dwayne Haskins has a good idea for his team’s new name.

The NFL franchise in Washington D.C. is preparing to change the team’s name. It’s been a long time coming but finally appears that the name will be changed ahead of the 2020 NFL season. So with only a little bit of time, before training camp begins and the NFL season begins in earnest, there’s only so much time to think of a new name to get on merchandise and before the team gets back to work.

Well, quarterback Dwayne Haskins already has one in mind.

Haskins would like his team to be called the Washington Redtails, in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen, who were the first African-American military fighter pilots in the armed forces and had a crimson tail on their planes.

It’s a perfect name and one that’s picking up steam among other players and the fan base.

Washington head coach Ron Rivera said as part of the team’s statement on reviewing the team name that honoring the military was an aspect they were considering. This would check off that if the franchise, owner Daniel Snyder especially, signs off on the new name for the franchise.

The Washington Redtails does have a nice ring to it.

And it’s helpful to have the endorsement of the team’s quarterback the franchise hopes will develop into their franchise quarterback this year. The second-year quarterback out of Ohio State has remade his body in this elongated offseason and appears to be in the best shape of his life. That’s a sentence that gets said and written a lot this time of year, but Haskins is at the top of the list of breakout candidates in the NFL.

If Haskins is helpful in getting the Redtails name adopted, he’ll forever be remembered as a Redtails legend for his impact on the franchise.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr made a joke on Twitter regarding a potential name change for the Washington Redskins.

For decades, several sports teams have come under fire because of their team names. One of the teams in question has been the NFL’s Washington Redskins. They have been under pressure from everyone from Native American groups to huge influential sponsors such as FedEx and Nike in the last week, to finally change their name.

A few comical suggestions have come to light when it comes to picking a new name for the franchise, but Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has an idea of his own.

The quarterback took to his Twitter account, retweeting a post from NFL insider Adam Schefter. The original tweet saw Schefter ask his followers for suggestions for a new team name. Carr responded with the Washington Sentinels, from the 2000 movie The Replacements.

It was a hilarious pop culture reference from the movie that starred Keanu Reeves and Gene Hackman. It wasn’t the highlight performance of Reeves’ film career, but it was memorable at best. His reference adds to a growing list of suggestions that the internet has been populating over the last few days.

In all seriousness, there is a legitimate chance that Washington may finally change its offensive name. Various media outlets have reported that since several influential groups and companies, team owner Dan Snyder has agreed to look into changing the name. Snyder has never felt the kind of pressure he’s felt recently regarding the change.

In the meantime, people are having fun at the expense of a new name. While some names can’t exactly be published here, Derek Carr is bringing a little comedy to the picture. It’s keeping a lighthearted take on things, which isn’t the worst thing in the world right now.

The Washington Redskins may be no more, with Dan Snyder facing outside pressure from top sponsors such as Nike, FedEx and Pepsi, forcing his hand for the first time. Despite decades of opposition from Native American groups and the general public, Snyder held strong, often trotting out cronies and questionable studies to back up his point that the oppressed did not, in fact, care about such a cause.

In the end, there’s no guarantee that cooler heads will prevail, but Snyder is at least considering some alternatives. Twitter, on the other hand, took a different approach, revealing some of the funniest potential names that Washington definitely should not take into account. WARNING: Some of these Twitter suggestions are NSFW.

Twitter had some curious alternate names for the Washington football team.

Well, we know one option that definitely won’t work.

Leave it to The Onion to put things in perspective.

BREAKING: The Washington Redskins have announced they are officually changing their name to the “Washington Fourandtwelves”

Well, if there were ever a time to embrace one’s true self, it’s now. Washington has slightly higher hopes under Ron Rivera, however.

Karen won’t be happy about this, especially if she has to look at it while wearing a mask.

The last thing we need is the President tweeting about this debate. Check your timelines, folks, he’s on the loose.

Inappropriate, but at least not racist.

Something tells me Dan Snyder isn’t gonna go for that one.

Still offensive, folks! Come on, we can do better.

Similar to Bomani Jones’ “Caucasians” T-shirt, something tells me this won’t go over too well.

Odd…but still better than the current version!

FINALLY, something we can all agree on.

Funny tweets or not, it’s time for Snyder to come to the conclusion he ought to have reached decades ago. Change the name. It’s about damn time.

Nike no longer features Washington Redskins gear on their website.

In what could very well be a sign of things to come, Nike may have joined FedEx in taking some form of moral high ground against Dan Snyder and the Washington football franchise. One look at the brand’s official website shows that Redskins gear has been removed in its entirety, with every other NFL team remaining.

Snyder’s previous insistence on keeping the offensive name has had purely financial motives, with rebranding deemed an impossible strategy from the Washington owner and his cronies. However, losing out on major sponsors wasn’t in the cards until now, which could very well change Snyder’s stance and force his hand.

Nike joins FedEx in applying pressure on Dan Snyder to change Washington Redskins name.

Snyder is notoriously stubborn in this department, and it will take more than just FedEx and Nike’s warning shots to truly make him punt on this erroneous fool’s errand. While most of the public, including Native American tribes, have opposed the team’s name for decades, Snyder has always found a way to sidestep public pressure by embracing any and all supporters, including those in the Native community who insist this isn’t a derogatory term.

Nonetheless, a slur, in any context, should not be used to describe a professional football team. Such an argument shouldn’t be a complicated one, and in a year where minorities have finally felt heard on the issues of racial inequality, taking down another public symbol of oppression just seems right.

Sure, rebranding isn’t cost-efficient, but neither is this much negative PR in opposition to one of the greatest movements of minority inclusion we’ve ever seen. By continuing to distance himself from the solution, Snyder is placing himself squarely on the wrong side of history and closer to moral bankruptcy and financial debt.

Dan Snyder might finally have to give in and change the Washington Redskins’ offensive team name.

The Washington football franchise, more commonly referred to as the Washington Redskins, has received heat for decades over the use of slur as their primary reference. Dan Snyder, who took over as owner from Jack Kent Cook, kept his predecessors stubborn and often in offensively steadfast denial over any attempt to change the team name and logo of his franchise. This is despite efforts from Native American groups to loudly voice their dissent.

Unfortunately, in the NFL, money is the only real motivating factor. By relinquishing their franchising rights of the term “Redskins,” Snyder would take a moderate financial hit and would also have to go through a (in his view) tiring rebranding process. Now, he may not have a choice but to finally embrace change.

FedEx, which owns the naming rights for the Washington Redskins’ stadium, is putting pressure on Dan Snyder to change the team name.

FedEx made their viewpoint on the debate as clear as ever in a short, poignant statement.

“We have communicated to the team in Washington our request that they change the team name,” a FedEx spokesperson said.

FedEx now joins the likes of Nike and PepsiCo. as major Washington investors who are considering pulling their sponsorship should Snyder not abide by their terms. It’s the first time in memory that corporations, rather than groups and independent actors, are making their voices heard. Sadly, the financial backing is about the only way Snyder would actually consider the ends no longer justifying the means in terms of the “Redskins” franchising rights.

If anything, such an influential motive from corporations speaks to the times we live in, where the voices of minorities are no longer left in the background of American society. Hopefully, Snyder finally gives in.

Adrian Peterson has a plan to play a few more years, with an obvious eye on finishing as the NFL’s all-time leading rusher.

Adrian Peterson has long had inflated goals for himself, but there’s something to be said for being 35 years old and still being employed as an NFL running back. As proven by his quick return from torn ACL to rush for 2,000 yards and win league MVP in 2012, nothing can be ruled out for him.

It’s not news that Peterson intends to play as long as he can. But he spoke to TMZ recently, and made his hopes more concrete.

“Man, why not four more years?” “Why not? I don’t want to ever be in a position where I look back and say, ‘Man, I should have played two more years, I should of played another year.’ I want to enjoy it. I’m still chasing a championship. You know, I can still play the game at a high level.”

Four more years would be through the 2023 season, which would be Peterson’s age-38 campaign. Running backs this side of Frank Gore don’t play close to that long.

But Peterson pretty clearly has his eye on a goal and target he has mentioned in the past. Emmitt Smith’s all-time rushing mark.

Could Adrian Peterson actually become the NFL’s all-time leading rusher?

Peterson will enter the 2020 season fifth on the all-time rushing list with 14,216 yards. Smith finished with 18,355 yards. So Peterson needs 4,140 yards to become the NFL’s all-time leading rusher.

If Peterson hadn’t lost big chunks of the 2014 and 2016 season to league punishment and a knee injury respectively, he would have a better chance to passing Smith. A lackluster 2017 campaign, split between the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals, was also not helpful.

Peterson would have to average 1,035 rushing yards per year over the next four seasons to pass Smith. He rushed for 1,042 yards in his first season for the Redskins in 2018, on 251 carries (fifth-most in the league). It’s safe to say he won’t be getting 250-plus carries again in any team’s ideal scenario. As long as Derrius Guice and other backs are healthy in Washington this year, anything close to last year’s 211 carries would be a big ask.

If Peterson were to be close to passing Smith at the end of the 2023 season, playing one more season would presumably be on the table. That also assumes a team would sign a 39-year old running back, for reasons beyond the attention gained from having Peterson become the league’s all-time rusher in its uniform. A further assumption is that Peterson avoids significant injury, and even has an opportunity to play four more seasons.

Plans and goals are nice, but Peterson’s chance to pass Smith has faded pretty much every year since 2014. He’s unlikely to play four more seasons, let alone get enough work to average more than 1,000 yards per.

Never say never when it comes to Peterson. But the the percentage he becomes the NFL’s all-time leading rusher, even if he’d rather not acknowledge it, is Blutarsky-esque 0.0.

Dwayne Haskins struggled for the Redskins in 2019, but there’s plenty of reason for optimism around the Washington quarterback heading into 2020.

The 2020 season is a make-or-break campaign for Dwayne Haskins. If he plays well then it’s very likely that Washington will commit to him as their franchise quarterback of the present and future. If he falters, it’s very likely that the Redskins front office will consider drafting a new signal-caller to replace him.

The fact that Haskins only went 2-5 as a starter in 2019 should give the organization pause about making him the face of the franchise. The reality that Haskins was responsible for two of his team’s three wins last season does show that he had a positive impact on his team.

He still needs to take a big step forward in 2020 to silence the doubters. Haskins isn’t going to turn the Redskins into Super Bowl contenders next year, but here are five reasons why he can pilot Washington to respectability.

5. The division isn’ t overwhelming

The NFC East has some interesting teams, but there isn’t an obvious Super Bowl contender in the bunch. That means that the Redskins should be able to win some games inside their own division.

Admittedly, Washington is going to be an underdog in every road game. Haskins is going to struggle when he’s forced to play at Dallas or Philadelphia. On the plus side, the Redskins will have a strong chance to be competitive in every home game they play inside the NFC East.

The team’s front office wants to see Haskins make progress against teams inside their own division. The lack of a dominating defense in this year’s division is going to set up nicely for the quarterback’s development.

The two-time Super Bowl champion defensive end Dexter Manley is back in good health.

Across the sporting scene in the nation’s capital, there were few figures as constant as Dexter Manley throughout the 1980s. A fearsome Redskins defensive end who hit double-digit sacks four times, he was a member of the Washington teams that won both Super Bowl XVII and Super Bowl XXII.

This spring, however, he faced a ruthless opponent that tested him like never before: the novel coronavirus. After a mid-May diagnosis, the news was consistently concerning regarding the state of his health. Fortunately, the man himself has emerge with a video message that even rival NFC East fans can cheer about.

Former Washington Redskins All-Pro defensive end Dexter Manley says he’s in good health after an extended struggle with COVID-19.

“I’m back, and you can’t keep a good man down,” Manley said, absolutely beaming.

In the days following his diagnosis becoming public, family members and former teammates reported that he was in poor condition, needed the assistance of oxygen, and at times had trouble speaking. That only makes today’s big news even sweeter.

In nine seasons with Washington, Manley recorded 91 sacks, which remains the franchise’s all-time record. He was a Pro Bowler and a First Team All-Pro selection in a 1986 season that saw him post 18.5 sacks, his career best. He went on to play one season each for the Cardinals and Buccaneers before finishing off his football career in the CFL.

[embedded content]

He was later inducted into the Redskins Ring of Fame, and a panel of experts picked him as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins in 1992 to mark the franchise’s 70th anniversary.

Over the course of this global pandemic and the national protests against racism and police brutality, matters of life and death have been unavoidably at the forefront. At a time in which good news feels hard to come by, the fans in DC can take heart that one of their greats has emerged on the other side of a very real struggle for his own life — and that he’s ready to cheer for the his favorite team when it’s football time once again.

Dwayne Haskins has worked on his body among other things this offseason.

We’ve been sleeping on Dwayne Haskins have a sensational sophomore season in the NFL.

The first-round pick of the Washington Redskins in the 2019 NFL Draft had a frustrating rookie year out of The Ohio State University. After being a Heisman Trophy finalist and the first first-round quarterback taken out of the Big Ten since Kerry Collins way back in 1995, Haskins looked over his skis and simply not ready to be the face of an NFL franchise as a rookie.

Washington was the worst team in the NFC a season ago, as the team fired its head coach in mid-October and ended up with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. It is a critical season for Haskins, as he wasn’t drafted by this regime and he needs to prove he’s the franchise quarterback owner Daniel Snyder believes he was coming out of Ohio State.

Well, it looks like Haskins has put in the work this offseason. He has supposedly lost 11 pounds and seven percent body fat off his frame. The guy looks shredded and ready to take on whatever the NFL puts in his way. Look for Haskins to experience that much-anticipated pop from his first year to his second year in the league. He looks fantastic!

Dwayne Haskins has transformed his body, but will his game translate?

While looking great with a shirt off is one thing, looking great playing the game of football is a totally different animal. New Redskins head coach Ron Rivera has been impressed with Haskins thus far in this chaotic offseason. Haskins’ Ohio State teammate and current Washington teammate in wide receiver Terry McLaurin was piling on the praise of his good friend as well.

For Washington to get out of the NFC East cellar, the rapport between Haskins and McLaurin will need to be as strong as ever. Washington should have a strong defense, or at least a pass rush, right away under its new defensive-minded head coach. However, defense can only take you so far in the NFL. Haskins knows he has to be better if Washington wants to be taken seriously.

Next: 5 NFL teams in dire need of a rebrand, please

What we are seeing out of Haskins is newfound maturity. He’s taking care of his body and putting in the work on the field to get better. Maybe he won’t take a premature victory selfie with a fan this year? It’s not like Case Keenum can scurry out on the field to take a knee in victory formation because he’s playing for the Cleveland Browns these days. We can only hope.

Haskins looks good and feels good, but will he play good for Washington? Let’s hope so.

Terry McLaurin is ready to see what Dwayne Haskins can do in year two.

Terry McLaurin is a huge fan of Dwayne Haskins, and why would he not be?

McLaurin and Haskins are not only teammates entering their second year with the Washington Redskins, but they starred together in college for the Ohio State Buckeyes. In 2018, Haskins became one of the most prolific passers in Ohio State history. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist and became the first Big Ten quarterback to go in the first round since Kerry Collins back in 1995.

While Haskins’ first year in Washington was tumultuous at best, it was McLaurin who proved to be one of the better rookie receivers in the NFL. Washington may have had a terrible record and fired its entire coaching staff, but there is a lot to like about this rapport between former Ohio State and current Redskins teammates. McLaurin offered his latest praise of his close friend.

“Dwayne’s looked great,” said McLaurin. “He looks really cut up, he’s slimmed down. He’s having fun again I feel like. A lot was thrown at him his first year, and I’m not making any excuses for him at all, but I feel like his focus is great right now physically, mentally…He’s ready to prove himself right and just ready to be the leader and the quarterback that this franchise needs and deserves.”

Is Dwayne Haskins ready to become the Washington’s franchise quarterback?

When Haskins came out of Ohio State, there was a lot to like about him going forward. He is a pure passer with great pocket presence and a willingness to throw the ball down field. Despite not being overly mobile, he shined during his one year as the Buckeyes starting quarterback in 2018. However, a lack of college starts made him a tad too raw to do much of anything last year.

Once former head coach Jay Gruden was fired, the Redskins became an even sloppier version of the chaotic mess they usually are. If you want to call Haskins’ rookie season in Washington a baptism by fire, you wouldn’t be wrong. However, most players improve the most in the offseason between the rookie and sophomore years in the league. Look for Haskins to be no different.

Not only does he have that awful rookie season out of the way, the Washington professional football franchise looks to be in its best spot in decades. With Bruce Allen out of the building and Ron Rivera as the new head coach, Washington may stop finally being dysfunctional this century. Along with offensive coordinator Scott Turner, Haskins’ growth potential is undeniable.

There will be accountability, there will be discipline and it will be about the work for once in Washington. These are all good things working in Haskins’ favor on his quest to becoming the franchise quarterback this franchise deserves. He may not ever be as good as Kirk Cousins, but Haskins has the best shot of any Washington quarterback to succeed there in decades.

McLaurin will always be a believer in Haskins, but maybe it’s time we join him in his praise?
