Can fantasy football owners trust Carson Wentz?

Fantasy Football, Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have not lived up to lofty expectations this year and much of that falls on quarterback Carson Wentz. Do we trust him in fantasy?

It has not been a great year for the Philadelphia Eagles or their starting quarterback Carson Wentz for that matter. Even though they are only a game back of the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC East race, the Eagles are below .500 at 5-6 through 11 games this season. Offensive inconsistency has been a major issue with this team all year long.

The Fantasy Footballers have taken notice of the poor play of Wentz of late. Two years ago, he was a frontrunner for NFL MVP before tearing his ACL. Now he’s a guy who is oftentimes a dangerous proposition to start in fantasy football. If you own him in your league, should you be worried at this point?

The Fantasy Footballers are split on the level of concern regarding potentially starting Wentz this week on the road vs. the Miami Dolphins. Jason Moore says that if Alshon Jeffery is able to play with his injured hand, then you can feel comfortable about starting Wentz because he’ll have a No. 1 wide receiver to throw the ball to in addition to his favorite target in tight end Zach Ertz.

Moore does tend to think that Jeffery will be back because the Eagles released Jordan Matthews earlier in the week. However, both Andy Holloway and Mike Wright aren’t into starting Wentz this week at all, even if he is playing the awful Dolphins down in Miami. They have seen Wentz struggle against bad teams this season and have major concerns about his lack of ball security.

Moore would say that if Jeffery doesn’t play on Sunday afternoon, then don’t start Wentz. So the return of an injured wide receiver is the lynchpin in deciding if you should start Wentz or not. That really tells you all you need to know about how Wentz is playing at this point.

At the end of the day, it is a high-risk, high-reward sort of proposition to start Wentz this week vs. the Dolphins. He can’t play as bad as he did last week vs. the Seattle Seahawks at home, right? But if Wentz does play that bad again, then there isn’t any point in starting him the rest of the fantasy season, especially with fantasy playoffs rapidly approaching.
