NFL owners are already talking about an 18-game season

NFL News

The NFL owners are already thinking about going to an 18-game schedule if the current CBA proposal doesn’t go through.

Why play 17 games when we can tack on an 18th?

This seems to be the thinking of NFL owners. The 32 men running clubs are already on the edge of getting what they want in the latest round of collective bargaining, with the new CBA calling for a 17-game schedule in the early portion of the 10-year deal.

However, word has leaked stating should the players not vote to agree on the proposal (the NFLPA is scheduled to vote this week and need a majority vote to pass), the owners will push for an 18-game slate.

This seems like a scare tactic being put into the ear of media types by the owners, trying to make sure the CBA gets ratified next week. Why? Because the economy is tanking due to Coronavirus, and the 2020 Presidential Election is threatening to hurt NFL ratings as the 2016 election did four years ago. The owners want to lock in their new TV deals at the highest possible rate.

Ultimately, look for the proposed CBA to pass this week. The agreement calls for players making the league’s minimum wage to see a $100K increase in salaries immediately. Incredibly, 60 percent of the NFL’s players are making such a rate, and with majority vote only needed to pass, most guys will vote it through with their wallets in mind.

Still, 18 games won’t be off the table forever. When it comes time to talk about the next deal, it’ll be the first priority for most owners, eyeing more money in the next round of TV talks.
