Patrick Mahomes on The Shop: ‘I want to be on Andy Reid’s level’

Kansas City Chiefs, NFL News

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went on HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted this week, and talked about his thirst for being even better.

Patrick Mahomes is terrify the rest of the NFL.

On HBO’s hit show The Shop: Uninterrupted, Mahomes touched on a bevy of topics, including somehow not knowing how to read defenses until the middle of last season. Yeah, after winning MVP in 2018 by throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns.

The 24-year-old also talked about wanting to become smart enough to hang with head coach Andy Reid, when asked about whether he’s ready to call his own plays.

“I want to get to the level coach Reid is at,” Mahomes said. “I’ll use as an example, we played the Denver Broncos in the snow and we had moved the ball well. In the red zone, they played zone coverage every single time, every single play. And so I wanted to call a different play, and coach Reid called a man-beater. He said ‘I want to call this man-beater right now.’ I’m looking at coach like, what are we doing? We get out there and those dudes are playing man coverage. Touchdown.

“He knew. I want to be on that level where I can think ahead.”

Reid, 61, finally won his first Super Bowl in February, beating the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20. This due in large part to Mahomes, who famously called for WASP on 3rd and 15 in the fourth quarter with Kansas City trailing 20-10.

Mahomes hit Tyreek Hill on the play for 44 yards, threw a touchdown pass moments later to Travis Kelce, and then another to running back Damien Williams on the next drive to put the Chiefs in the lead for good.

The Chiefs are already heavy favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champions, with Vegas giving them 9/2 odds to win it all once more. The Baltimore Ravens come in at 7/1, while the 49ers are getting 8/1 odds.
