Cam Newton, Tyrod Taylor photo sparks Chargers rumors

Los Angeles Chargers, NFL Free Agency, NFL News

Cam Newton worked out with Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor, and the rumors are flying about what the photo means.

Cam Newton needs a new home. The Los Angeles Chargers need a quarterback.

Armed with a quality roster and cap space, general manager Tom Telesco has a decision to make. He can go to the NFL Draft in four weeks looking for a signal-caller to replace Philip Rivers in the long term and compete with veteran Tyrod Taylor in the short term. He can also draft a left tackle in the first round, take a project at quarterback later and let Taylor play out 2020.

Or, Telesco could sign Newton to a one-year deal and see what the veteran has left in the tank.

On Thursday, more fuel was added to Door No. 3, when Taylor posted a picture of he and Newton working out together on his Instagram at an undisclosed location.

Newton, 30, is coming off a year shortened by foot surgery after Week 2. The offseason prior was about rehabbing his right shoulder after going under the knife. Newton hasn’t been fully healthy in two years, but when right, he’s one of the elite quarterbacks in the game.

Only four years ago, he accounted for 45 touchdowns while being named NFL MVP, leading the Carolina Panthers to a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl 50 appearance.

Should the Chargers go into the draft targeting a quarterback, they pick No. 6 overall. Los Angeles would be third in line for teams rumored to be interested in going said route, with the Cincinnati Bengals almost certainly taking Joe Burrow, while the Miami Dolphins could take Justin Herbert, Tua Tagovailoa or Jordan Love at No. 5 overall.
