The Kansas City Chiefs don’t have a timeline for when they will hammer out a record-smashing contract extension with Patrick Mahomes, but rest assured Chiefs fans, it will get done.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won the NFL MVP in only his first season as a starting quarterback, and after being a coin toss away from the Super Bowl in the same season, he went ahead and won a ring in 2020.
Mahomes is the biggest star in the NFL, and the Chiefs want to get a man who has already become the most important player in franchise history signed to a long-term extension.
The problem is hammering a deal will be complicated, with the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero placing “sometime after” the NFL Draft as a rough timeline for when negotiations could begin.
In a recent conference call, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach wasn’t able to give a “timetable,” via the Kansas City Star, on when the team will be able to work out an extension with Mahomes.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding when both parties will be able to talk shop, Chiefs fans should be far from worried.

Because Veach also used words like “priority” and phrases like “isn’t going anywhere” in the same conference call. The Chiefs decision-makers have always known a deal will be a process with Mahomes, especially since the superstar quarterback is expected to set a new standard for NFL contracts.
Currently, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is the highest-paid player in the league, earning $35 million per year. Mahomes could hit $40 million, with the guaranteed money being another interesting aspect of the deal.
At 24 years old, Mahomes is the clear leader of the Chiefs organization and the most valuable player in the NFL. What he’s accomplished in his first two years as a starting quarterback is nothing short of historic, and he’s changed what people believed was possible at the position. Mahomes’ accuracy, vision, confidence, arm strength, creativity, ability to read defenses, and anticipation are unparalleled in the NFL.
Above all else, Mahomes has shown an ability to pull through tough victories when it seems like the odds are stacked against him.
