Madden 21 cover going to Lamar Jackson was a total no-brainer

Baltimore Ravens

The Madden 21 cover will feature Ravens quarterback and reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. This was a total no-brainer to put him on the cover.

Lamar Jackson took the entire NFL by storm in his sophomore season in 2019. He was fun to watch as a rookie in 2018, but people doubted his abilities heading into year two and didn’t think much of the Baltimore Ravens. Many handed the division to Browns — who appeared to win free agency — but the Ravens were the top team in the AFC North because of the NFL MVP.

Jackson threw for 596 yards and seven touchdowns with no interceptions in his first two games of the 2019 season to go along with 126 rushing yards. Right off the bat, he showed that he was a quarterback to watch, but even with the hot start, people still doubted him.

Jackson kept that explosiveness up for the rest of the season, finishing the campaign with 3,127 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and six interceptions while rushing for 1,206 yards and seven touchdowns. Game after game, Jackson wowed fans with his elusiveness and as such, he won the league MVP.

There shouldn’t have even been a debate regarding who the Madden cover athlete would be. Jackson was the no-brainer MVP and he’s the no-brainer option to have on the cover of Madden. Jackson himself was basically a cheat code in the 2019 season, evading defenders on his way to the end zone week after week.

Jackson might have fizzled in the biggest game of the season and his Ravens were one and done in the playoffs as a result, his 2019 season was one NFL fans will never forget. He’ll be the player every kid wants to play as on Madden and that’s what makes him the perfect cover athlete for the next edition of the video game.

With the new cover athlete chosen, now there will be discussions if the Madden curse will “get” Lamar Jackson. The last player to be on the cover was Patrick Mahomes – who won the Super Bowl and was the game’s MVP – but also was injured and missed two starts as a result. While the Madden curse wasn’t as prevalent there, it still struck and nearly cost the Kansas City Chiefs from having a big season.

It’ll be tough for Jackson to follow up the season he had in 2019, especially with the kind of player he is, but for now, he’s the talk of the league and will continue to be so until next season’s next star emerges.
