Jameis Winston to the Saints and the dynasty league impact

Fantasy Football, New Orleans Saints

Jameis Winston signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints the day after the 2020 NFL Draft. How does this impact his dynasty league value?

The New Orleans Saints did some big things over the weekend to their quarterbacking room. They drafted former Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Tommy Stevens in the seventh-round. New Orleans also gave Taysom Hill a massive extension. But right between those two moves, the Saints went out and signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston.

Winston leaves one NFC South team for another on what looks to be a stop-gap deal for the former Heisman Trophy winner and top pick out of Florida State. Though we can’t expect Winston to play a ton of snaps in New Orleans behind Drew Brees in 2020, what is his value in fantasy football dynasty leagues at this time?

Mike Wright of The Fantasy Footballers perhaps puts it best: Winston has no value in dynasty leagues, as well as a ton of value in dynasty leagues. Because he will likely be holding a clipboard backing up Brees in 2020 while watching Hill do his thing as a glorified gadget player, we can’t expect much out of Winston this fall. However, you shouldn’t drop him in your dynasty league.

If this is indeed Brees’ last year with the Saints, Winston will likely beat out Hill for the starting job in 2021 if Winston re-ups on a second contract in New Orleans. Should Winston leave for a third team in three years, maybe he’s ready to start once again after getting the interception machine stink off him from his five-year run with the Buccaneers?

An underrated fact in all this is Winston will help the Saints in the quarterback room by giving them a little bit of insight about what the rival Buccaneers will try to do offensively know that Tom Brady is in Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers are the biggest threat to the Saints in NFC South for divisional supremacy this fall.

Overall, Winston isn’t going to help your dynasty league one bit in the short-term. Then against, isn’t the whole point of dynasty leagues it to keep key players for the long-term? Winston may never become a franchise quarterback again, but he’s certainly worth keeping on your dynasty league roster. He’ll surely have a bigger opportunity in 2021 once Brees has hung up the spikes.
