No, Rob Gronkowski didn’t have the Bucs playbook before he was traded

Gronkowski raised eyebrows after saying he had the Buccaneers playbook weeks ago. But he clarified: It’s just a joke.

Rob Gronkowski has only been a Tampa Bay Buccaneer for a few weeks, but he’s already causing controversy.

Last weekend, during an NFL Draft afterparty, ESPN’s Sage Steele talked about how Joe Burrow, who was the No. 1 overall pick, had been studying the Cincinnati Bengals’ playbook weeks before the draft. Gronkowski jumped in and said, “I was in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ playbook four weeks ago, and I wasn’t even on the team.”

The comment raised questions about whether or not Tampa had violated league rules in their trade with New England. But on Wednesday night, Gronkowski tweeted, “I was just joking around with Sage.” He added a photo of himself holding his unopened Microsoft Surface, which he said the team gave him on Wednesday.

And, of course, the superstar tight end finished with the last laugh.

“It’s still in the package, and hoping it is all pictures and drawings,” Gronkowski wrote. “Gronk run Gronk catch ball. No playbook needed.”

Gronkowski came out of retirement to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after they signed former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. The reunion between these two elite players has given rise to a new hope in Tampa and will certainly be a fun thing to watch in the coming season.

But Gronkowski isn’t the only one who caused controversy in his first few weeks with Tampa. Brady has also had his issues, including visiting the team’s offensive coordinator before it was allowed on the NFL calendar, walking into a stranger’s house by mistake and violating Florida’s stay-at-home order by working out in a public park.

“Trespassing in parks, breaking and entering,” Brady wrote on Twitter. “Just making myself home in Tompa Bay!”
