Dolphins fans are anxious to see what Tua Tagovailoa can bring in 2020, but Miami needs massive contributions from these five stars to up their win total.

For much of the 2019 regular season it looked as if the Dolphins were headed towards the No. 1 pick in the draft. Then, a late season surge helped Miami finish with a respectable 5-11 record. That pushed the franchise down in the draft’s pecking order, but they still came away with a potential quarterback of the future in the form of Tua Tagovailoa.

The former Alabama signal caller’s battle with Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job is going to dominate the headlines in South Florida until Tagovailoa ultimately prevails. That doesn’t mean quarterback is the only position of concern for the Dolphins in 2020.

The defense finished dead last in the NFL by giving up 30.9 points per game a season ago. In particular, the front seven struggled to generate any meaningful pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The good news for ‘Fins fans is that the team spent a lot of money in free agency to fix that issue.

The offense wasn’t much better. Fitzpatrick gave the unit some life down the stretch, but they still finished 25th in the league in points per game. Adding Tagovailoa to the mix wasn’t the only big draft asset used to strengthen the team’s attack though. First round pick Austin Jackson will also be counted on to bolster the team’s offensive line.

Add it all up and the Dolphins are still miles away from playoff contention, but things should be more fun for Miami fans in 2020. Just how fun will depend on the play of the following five guys.

5. Byron Jones

The Dolphins made the bold move of making Jones the highest paid cornerback in the NFL in free agency. Interestingly, that gives Miami the two highest paid corners in the game. Both Jones and Xavien Howard need to play like Pro Bowlers to make this defense competitive. Jones makes this list because he’ll face more scrutiny as the new guy in town.
