The New York Giants are still in the midst of a rebuild, and their 2020 schedule should provide some opportunities to assess how far along they are in the process.
In an era of parity where it is hard to be really good or really bad for long, the New York Giants have trended towards the bad end of the scale for a while. The Giants have made the playoffs just once since winning Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, and the last three years have seen New York go 12-36.
A failed attempt to win in Eli Manning’s last few years set the Giants back, but Dave Gettleman has finally begun making moves towards setting the franchise on a path to long term success. This offseason hasn’t been splashy for the Giants, but they have begun patching some holes on a leaky defense, signing Blake Martinez and James Bradberry to solid deals.
The ultimate direction the Giants’ season will take depends entirely on the development of quarterback Daniel Jones, who showed some signs of promise in his rookie year. The big concern with Jones was his penchant for fumbling the football, with all of those turnovers derailing Giants’ drives at inopportune times.
New York also hired a new coach this offseason, tabbing former Patriots’ special teams coordinator Joe Judge to replace Pat Shurmur. Judge won the press conference as well as the hearts and minds of New Yorkers with his talk of winning football games the right way, but that talk won’t matter much to Giants fans if the team continues to lose.
The 2020 schedule offers some unique opportunities for the Giants to prove themselves against strong competition from the NFC West and AFC North. One matchup that will draw national attention is when the Cleveland Browns come to town and bring back Odell Beckham Jr to face off with the franchise that dealt him last spring.
