With a new head coach and a dynamic pass rusher chosen second in the NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins will look to step up against an intriguing schedule in 2020.
It is no secret that the Washington Redskins are in the midst of a rebuild, and that’s okay. Washington went just 3-13 in 2019 and the team was so bad that head coach Jay Gruden was fired after a Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots.
The disastrous season led to an overhaul in Washington, with Daniel Snyder firing Bruce Allen after the year as well. Snyder turned to a proven winner, former Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera, to serve as a steward to guide the franchise back to stability.
Rivera’s first order of business is to figure out how to salvage last year’s first-round pick, quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who looked lost at various points of the season. The 2020 season for the Redskins will be defined by how Haskins performs, and if he struggles, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Washington in the market for a quarterback again next spring.
The good news for Redskins fans is that their defense should get a significant shot in the arm after drafting Chase Young with the second overall pick in April’s virtual NFL Draft. Young, the best pure pass rusher in this year’s class, should help harass the other talented quarterbacks in the NFC East for years to come.
As a member of the NFC East, the Redskins’ schedule is always a bit more challenging and filled with marquee games. Aside from traditional rivalries with the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and New York Giants, Washington will have to contend with matchups against the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers and regional rival Baltimore Ravens.
