Cowboys fans should give up the dream of Jamal Adams

Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets

Cowboys fans should stop dreaming about a Jamal Adams trade.

You can’t always get what you want, especially if your a fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite being “America’s Team”, they haven’t given you anything close to a Super Bowl championship in 25 years. Perpetually always one player away, Cowboys fans have dreamt up a concoction of New York Jets safety Jamal Adams coming home to play in Dallas in a blockbuster trade. Well, this dream needs to die like you becoming an astronaut because it ain’t happening.

The NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the Jets have no interest in trading their superstar safety. In fact, Gang Green wants to offer the former No. 6 overall pick a long-term extension. While the Jets already gave Adams the fifth-year option as a former first-rounder, Garafolo says the reason the inevitable extension has been delayed has been because of the global pandemic.

Why would the Jets want to give up on one of their three best players anyway? There may be some debate about keeping him long-term because of the position he plays. However, Gang Green knows first-hand what it’s like to have a dominant player in the defensive backfield. East Rutherford, New Jersey was home to Revis Island for the better part of his hall of fame career.

In short, the Jets need to win this fall if head coach Adam Gase wants a third year as head coach. While he specializes on the offensive side of the ball, why would he want to willingly have his general manager Joe Douglas trade away the best playmaker on Gregg Williams’ defense heading into a critical season for all involved? It doesn’t make any sense!

Stop dreaming about Jamal Adams, Cowboys fans!

As for the Cowboys, literally the only thing that matters at this point is figuring out how much you’re going to need to pay quarterback Dak Prescott to keep him around beyond this fall. You’ve paid just about everyone else under the sun instead of the franchise quarterback you don’t want to admit is a franchise quarterback. So of course, his contract negations aren’t going well at all.

While it’s cool Adams grew up in suburban DFW, the Cowboys already had a Pro Bowler in the secondary they let walk in free agency because they decided to feed Zeke twice before paying Dak. Is Adams better than Byron Jones? Yes, but trading for Adams is only putting a band-aid of a larger, more systemic roster health issue. Dallas doesn’t spend more where it matters most first.

In between losing every other nationally televised game in primetime, Cowboys fans have time to divert their attention and watch native son Adams go to work in New York. Maybe one he will end up back in Dallas? Cowboys fans need to stop dreaming and accept the fact Douglas isn’t dumb enough to trade him to your team for anything short of a king’s ransom. For a safety, no thanks.

Adams will remain a Jet and won’t become a Cowboy, so quit dreaming.
