In the AFC North, young quarterbacks have taken over the division. Who is the division’s best signal caller?

All but one team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, in the AFC North will start a quarterback under the age of 26 in 2020. Assuming the Cincinnati Bengals give Joe Burrow the job right away.

Baker Mayfield is 25 years old, while Burrow and Lamar Jackson are 23. The latter two will turn 24 in December (Burrow) and January (Jackson).

Ben Roethlisberger is the eldest of the group. At age 38, 2020 will be his 17th NFL season, which all have been spent with the Steelers. The veteran Roethlisberger was around for the division’s best quarterback days, and now he will spend some time playing the new generation of AFC North gunslingers.

For the Browns, Mayfield will enter year three as the team’s starter. Consistency under center is something this organization has not had in years.

So, who is the best quarterback in the AFC North?

4. Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow: 2019 (LSU) – 5,671 yards, 65 Total TD, 6 INT.

All signs indicate that Zac Taylor will start his rookie quarterback right away in 2020. The Bengals released Dalton, who has since inked a one-year deal to play behind Dak Prescott in Dallas with the Cowboys.

Joe Burrow was selected number-one overall in the NFL Draft. He is coming of a historic season at LSU. A year that some call the greatest in college football history.

As you can see above, Burrow’s numbers support the “best season ever” argument. He completed over 76 percent of his throws, threw for 60 scores and added five more on the ground, and he tossed only six interceptions.

Burrow won the Heisman Trophy and led the LSU Tigers to the national title.

It would be unfair to rank Burrow any higher without throwing a pass in the NFL. He will make mistakes as he acclimates to the pros but he could also jump a ranking with a big rookie season.

The AFC South quarterback picture has recently seen change. Who is the best signal caller in this division now? AFC South power rankings are below.

For a long stretch, the Indianapolis Colts had the best quarterbacks in the AFC South. Peyton Manning from about 1999 to his final season with the Colts in 2010. And then, Andrew Luck for five of his six years in the NFL.

In a division that has not had many teams with stable quarterback situations, the Houston Texans have had to cycle through several signal callers since 2010. Matt Schaub, when healthy, was the starter from about 2007-13. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Case Keenum got starts after Schaub.

Following the Schaub days; Tom Savage, Brock Osweiler and Brian Hoyer got the bulk of the starts. Then, in ’17, the Deshaun Watson era began.

With the Tennessee Titans, Marcus Mariota was the main starter from 2015-18. In the years before him, some names the Titans had to turn to were Jack Locker, Matt Hasselbeck, Zach Mettenberger and Fitzpatrick.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had David Garrard, as well as many other signal callers in the past 10 years. Since Garrard’s last season in 2010, the Jaguars have gone through players such as Blaine Gabbert, Chad Henne, Blake Bortles, Cody Kessler, Nick Foles and now Gardner Minshew II.

Now, how does the division rank?

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

Gardner Minshew: 2019 – 3,271 yards, 21 Total TD, 6 INT.

Prior to last season, Nick Foles signed a lucrative contract to become the new starter for the Jaguars. He threw eight passes before getting injured in Week 1.

Gardner Minshew, a sixth-round pick who played college football at Washington State and East Carolina, came in and took the job from the injured Foles.

When Foles returned from injury, Minshew was benched for a couple of games before Doug Marrone gave him the starting role for the rest of the season.

At times, Minshew played well for the Jaguars. In his 12 starts, he went 6-6. He was steady for Marrone.

Minshew threw at least one touchdown in every start besides two. He also threw multiple interceptions in a single game once.

The 23-year old kept the Jaguars competitive and positioned the team to win. Foles has since gone to the Chicago Bears, meaning it is Minshew for the time being in Jacksonville.

The NFC South may have the most loaded crop of quarterbacks in the entire NFL, but who is the division’s best passer?

There may not be a better division in football in terms of quarterbacks than the NFC South. The division was already stacked with Matt Ryan and Drew Brees, but the crop got stronger when Teddy Bridgewater moved to Carolina to replace Cam Newton and Tom Brady took over for Jameis Winston in Tampa Bay.

Who is the top dog in the NFC South’s quarterback power rankings? We’ll find out shortly, but we’ll start at the bottom with Bridgewater.

4. Teddy Bridgewater (Carolina Panthers)

2019 Stats: 67.9% completion rate, 1,384 yards, 9 touchdowns, 2 interceptions

You know it’s a tough list to crack when Bridgewater is last. Despite going 5-0 in place of an injured Brees for the Saints in 2019, Bridgewater is still the worst quarterback in the NFC South.

This is not an indictment of Bridgewater’s ability since he is more than capable of starting for plenty of teams in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers liked what they saw out of Bridgewater, signing him to a three-year, $63 million deal to take over for Newton as the team’s starting quarterback.

Bridgewater may not have the same upside as he did before a horrific knee injury with the Minnesota Vikings, but he can still be an effective winner at the NFL level. The Panthers do have a solid supporting cast for Bridgewater as well, giving him a chance to put up some solid numbers in 2020.

In the NFC East, two teams have veterans, while the other two have young signal callers adjusting to the next level. Who is the number-one ranked quarterback?

The NFC East once had some of the best quarterbacks in the NFL playing in the same division. Tony Romo was in Dallas, Eli Manning was hoisting the Lombardi for the Giants, and Donovan McNabb was navigating the Eagles through some golden years.

Combined, those three accounted for 14 Pro Bowl selections, two Super Bowls and Super Bowl MVP awards, and one Walter Payton Man of the Year honoree.

For the Redskins, they have cycled through many signal callers such as Jason Campbell, McNabb, Rex Grossman, Robert Griffin III, Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith and even Mark Sanchez.

Now, each of those teams think they have the future under center for them. Jerry Jones has Dak Prescott, Joe Judge will work with second-year quarterback Daniel Jones, Doug Pederson has won with Carson Wentz, and Ron Rivera will look to make Dwayne Haskins into an NFL starter.

What are the quarterback power rankings for the NFC East?

4. Washington Redskins

Dwayne Haskins: 2019- 1,365 yards, 7 Total TD, 7 INT.

Dwayne Haskins was not ready for the NFL when former head coach Jay Gruden threw him in. In his first action, he threw three interceptions against the New York Giants after coming in to relieve Case Keenum.

Then, Haskins didn’t play for a few weeks before he took the starting duty.

Haskins has the talent to be an NFL starter. However, it appeared Gruden did not ready his rookie quarterback last season. Interim head coach Bill Callahan gave Haskins a chance to start as the season progressed.

In his final six games, Haskins flashed some of that potential. He threw for 1,081 yards with seven scores and three interceptions. He was sacked 21 times and completed just under 58 percent of his throws.

Ron Rivera is the new head coach for the Redskins. Haskins is going to get a chance to win the starting job, but Rivera did trade for one of his former quarterbacks with the Panthers, Kyle Allen.

Haskins was raw last year. In year two, he can prove a lot with some confidence from his head coach.

With Tom Brady now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the AFC East’s quarterback power rankings will look a bit different in 2020.

For a long time, ranking the quarterbacks in the AFC East was arbitrary and reductive. Tom Brady was always at the top and the other three quarterbacks would fall behind him.

Times have changed with Brady off to Tampa Bay, meaning there is a new world order in terms of AFC East quarterbacks. How do the new quarterbacks rank? Let’s start with our fourth-best quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins.

4. Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins)

2019 Stats (College): 71.4% completions, 2,840 yards, 33 touchdowns, 3 interceptions

In terms of pure promise, Tagovailoa might be the most talented player on the list and end up with the best career. The Dolphins banked on that promise when they made him the fifth pick in the draft, with Tagovailoa having a chance to compete with Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting job in training camp.

The reason Tagovailoa is last on the list is because he hasn’t played a down in the NFL yet, so it’s not fair to rank him ahead of three other quarterbacks that have played in the league already. There are also significant injury risks with Tagovailoa, who has already had surgery on both ankles and a serious hip injury this past season.

If we do this list again in five years, there is a great chance Tagovailoa will be on top of it. At this moment in 2020, however, Tagovailoa is looking up at the rest of the quarterbacks in his division.

With the 2020 draft now history, the current NFL power rankings have the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints at the top 2 spots.

An unprecedented NFL draft which saw 255 players selected is all said and done. There’s still plenty of work ahead for all 32 clubs. So is it too early to talk 2020 NFL Power Rankings?
Not really. Here’s a look at where the teams stand only at the moment. It’s a review of each organization’s biggest addition as well as an offseason review. Combine that with a little recent history and you have the list as it stands at the moment. And as can be predicted, these rankings will certainly change as times wears on.

32

Carolina Panthers

2020 Key Additions: The team as a new head coach in Matt Rhule, a new offensive coordinator in Joe Brady and a new defensive leader in Phil Snow. There’s also been a change at quarterback in veteran Teddy Bridgewater, late of the rival New Orleans Saints. The club was fairly active in free agency, with Robby Anderson one of many wide receivers signed by the team. The Panthers dealt for tackle Russell Okung and picked up linebacker Tahir Whitehead after he was cut by the Raiders. The team stressed defense early in the draft, adding interior presence Derrick Brown (Auburn) with the seventh overall pick.

Offseason Review: Bridgewater takes over for Cam Newton, cut loose by the franchise after nine seasons – the last two plagued by injuries. The Panthers dropped their final right games after a 5-3 start this past season. The defense has declined in recent years and is now minus retired middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, defensive tackle Vernon Butler (Bills) and cornerback James Bradberry (Giants) – to name just a few pieces. Rhule is the first offensive-minded head coach in the history of this franchise and hopes to fix a club that is a combined 12-20 the past two seasons after finishing 11-5 and reaching the playoffs in ‘17.

31

Cincinnati Bengals

2020 Key Additions: The club began its second year under head coach Zac Taylor being busier than usual during the free agency. The Bengals added the likes of defensive tackle D.J. Reader, safety Vonn Bell, former Minnesota Vikings’ cornerback Trae Waynes and Mackensie Alexander and linebacker Josh Bynes. And with the first overall pick in the draft, Cincinnati secured the services of Heisman Trophy winner and 2019 national champion quarterback Joe Burrow and the team also added wide receiver Tee Higgins (Clemson) in the second round. The club was in dire need of linebacker help and added three in the draft.

Offseason Review: It’s going to be interesting to see what’s ahead for quarterback Andy Dalton, whose time has obviously run out in the Queen City. The club’s veteran additions in free agency, particularly on defense, should provide help immediately. Reader is an underrated performer and should upgrade the NFL’s worst run defense from a year ago. It’s been an unfortunate fall from grace for a club that was in the playoffs for five consecutive years (2011-15) and has followed that up for four straight losing seasons. If Burrow can make his presence felt from Day One, this team will at least be interesting on offense.

Love where the Dolphins are headed. They could shoot up the rankings with a monster draft. They’ll well-equipped for one, by the way, with 14 picks.

The Chiefs won Super Bowl 54 and they’re also coming in at the top spot in our 2020 NFL Power Rankings with the 49ers and Ravens on their heels.

With Sunday’s 31-20 win in Super Bowl LIV at South Florida, the Kansas City Chiefs captured their second Lombardi Trophy and first since 1969. It also means it’s a total wrap on the NFL’s 100th season. Hence the final NFL Power Rankings for 2019, with a little bit of a look ahead (salary cap numbers via Spotrac) to the next decade.

Note: Win-loss records include playoffs.

32. Carolina Panthers (5-11)

4th Place, NFC South

Season Review: From losing their first two games to ripping off five wins in their next six contests to a season-ending eight consecutive defeats, the Panthers were non-competitive far too often the second half of the season and finished with their worst record since going 2-14 in 2010. Head coach Ron Rivera was dismissed after a Week 13 home loss to the Redskins and ironically enough, is now the new sideline boss in D.C. The club would go through three different starting quarterbacks, committed the second-most turnovers in the league with 35 turnovers and only three teams allowed more yards per game rushing.

2019 Turning Point: The Panthers lost their final eight games after a 5-3 start. That included a tough 34-31 loss at the Superdome in Week 12 to the NFC South rival Saints. Joey Slye missed a 28-yard field goal in the closing minutes that would have given Carolina the lead. Instead, the Panthers’ defense wilted late.

2020 Priorities: The new head coach is Matt Rhule (Baylor University). The future won’t include tight end Greg Olsen as he and the team opted to go part ways. As for free agency, Carolina would likely not want to lose tackle Daryl Williams, defensive tackle Vernon Butler and/or cornerback James Bradberry.

31. Detroit Lions (3-12-1)

4th Place, NFC North

Season Review: The second year of the Matt Patricia Era in the Motor City began with some promise. After a Week 1 tie with the Arizona Cardinals, the club came away with wins over the Chargers and Eagles. But the Lions would win only won more game the remainder of the season and closed 2019 with nine consecutive setbacks. This was one of many clubs that utilized three different starting signal-callers (Matthew Stafford, Jeff Driskel and David Blough) and regardless of who was throwing the ball, wideout Kenny Golladay enjoyed a Pro Bowl year. And Detroit’s defense disappointed throughout the season.

2019 Turning Point: A 23-22 loss at Lambeau Field on a Monday night in Week 6 had to be somewhat disheartening considering the Lions jumped out to a 10-0 first-quarter lead and were dominating the eventual NFC North champions. But Patricia’s team couldn’t make the plays in the fourth quarter.

2020 Priorities: The decision was made weeks ago in terms of Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn and both are back for 2020. Some may question the decision on the former considering his 9-22-1 record in two seasons. And will the organization allow defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson to test free agency?
